Awesome! except.....I gotta say that I am not sure about the (her)right arm seems offset from where her shoulder would meet it? Beautiful work though!

....to explain my point, the bicep is facing us when it seems like it should be sitting on top to match the direction of her forearm...

Here is a detail of the arm fix. I had to adjust the cape and the shoulder, but it looks much better now. I appreciate the help greatly!

I don't know if you guys ever watched, but the colour scheme ( and to some extent the art itself) reminds me of the old school HE-MAN / SHEERA cartoon series. I think I'm swimming in nostalgia, good pic!

Brandon, cool another comic book dude.

I'm John CLeary, did work with Todd Mcfarlane, DC, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, Malibu, some small publishers and a bunch of creator owned stuff.

Havent done much comic work in the last few years though. Last thing I did was a few creator owned comics. I am now a sculptor.

I am actually working on something new that I am creating. Dont really know when or even if it will be published since I'm not to keen on dealing with distributors and printing. I'm more of a creator rather than a producer but we'll see what happens, I just want to write and draw something new.

Anyway, cool piece! I really like the colors. Is this for a book youre working on or a personal piece?

Very cool drawing I must say. I am still trying to figure out how to paint good in Painter and photoshop. When I have something I think is decent I'll post it.

Amazing. Just amazing. However, I do have one critique for you

. The very first thing that caught my eye with this picture is that area where your brushstrokes became especially broad, just the left of her head. The positioning of these strokes seems slightly out of place, as if its distracting from the finer details of the image.

Your work is totally incredible.

I really love that pic. Only thing that bothers me is the hair at the back of her neck. It kind of looks like it's going behind the neck rather than over the neck. And to me this makes the neck look really skinny.

Apart from that I like everything about it!

At first glance, I thought of Adam Hughes influences(the art nouveau design, the face..etc)

Good piece. The only things that jumped out at me, I did a quick overpaint of. I don't think they are mistakes. Maybe just my own subjective preference? We do a lot of overpaints here to "show" instead of "tell." Hope you don't mind. It's a Sijun thing, and I personally love how constructive it is.

Anyway, good to have another comic dude here.

I'm an ex-comic dude(don't know if you remember Enchanted, published by Sirius?).

Hello, my name is Brandon Peterson. I have just started to dabble with digital painting after a dozen years as a comic book penciller for a number of large companies in the industry. This piece started out as a pencil outline drawing I did, which I scanned and worked up to a color piece in Photoshop using just the pencil tool and a wacom tablet, with some layers for the special effects. I was going for a sort of Mucha-esque color harmony feel and composition, while retaining some of the comic book sensibilities of the character. The piece will be printed at 11x17 400 dpi so a lot of the strokes and mark-making is lost in this small jpeg. I am looking for any suggestions or critiques. Thanks!

First off, this is gorgeous. I love it. Your style is really great, with a combination of confident lines, and subtle colour variations.

My only beef (and it is miniscule), is that the image is perhaps a little too tinted with red. I realize that was likely your intent, but I think it might better serve if you were to create colour contrast with the skin of the female, and the reds in the cloth (perhaps a slightly blue/green addition to the fleshtones).

Just my 0.02, take it as you will. And welcome!

Hey everyone, thanks for being so great to me and really giving alot of good help. I am really stoked about this community. Let me address everyone if I could who I haven't.

Corn Pops - Yes, I am going for a very deliberate red scheme. I agree with your advice, I just think for this piece I really like the color balance so skewed. Thank you for the help, though.

Tarandon - I was going for more of a Thundercats vibe, myself. Just joking!

JohnC - I do remember you. Very energetic style, lots of gesture. I still have issues of yours from my early Image comps. This character is from the book I was doing the last 2 years called Mystic. I am doing it for a promotional piece I will be giving away at the Angouleme comic festival in Paris in January. I will be the geust of Semic, a great publisher of many american titles in France. I am really anxious to make a good impression on the Europeans. Maybe I can be the next Jerry Lewis or Davisd Hasselhoff!

Cicinimo - I see what you mean. Those brush strokes used to duplicate a symbol that appears specifically in the comic, a symbol called the 'sigil'. It actually lokes very painterly, so thus the painterly quality. I can see your point, though.

Switch - Oh, another good call! I have fixed it and thanks for the great eye, man

Lunatique - Big Adam Hughes/Art Nouveau fan here, you are right. I appreciate the overpaint and don't mind at all. I do think the areas are a little subjective, but thank you for taking the time to do such a thorough critique.

GreanPeach - Oh well, never thought I'd be called a bad influence. I guess Mom was right about my recklessness catching up to me.

Malachi- I will respond in the other thread, then.

Hmmm looking at lunatiques over paint ... I would have to say I like Brandons version better and that the over paint makes it look stiff and flat I think you pretty off base in your over paint. The thing I am not sure about is the glowy magic effect. Just my opnion

Wow I remember meeting you in Birmingham, Alabama at a signing you were doing. Man your style/work has kept on improving! Good work man. Not much that I can say that hasn't already been pointed out. I love the image in general, its just really well executed in my opinion. Good luck in all of your endeavors in the future.

down. But her neck bones, balloon boobs and
hair, are a little off. Even for a cartoonist.

So many years since being unfairly branded a "Lee-clone" isn't it?

I love this, Brando. I must say that the red hues seem to get a bit saturating to the eyes at times, but it's just a minor complaint. The strokes for her flesh in the bottom half are great. I love how loose they seem with such tight guidelines in the inkwork. I could see the AH! influence as well, but this had your mark all over it. It's funny, since I didn't see your tagline at the top first, and merely saw the picture, thinking "Gee, whoever did this really snagged a Peterson-looking face."

It's great work, and I hope the next piece makes gains even on this, maybe a bit of colour variance and a slightly dynamic look as well. Of course I was just always a fan of your figures in action

Seeing as I completely dropped comics a while back (other than still penciling for promotional materials...yeah, I laughed too) how is Crossgen anyway?

Okee, something about the depth was bugging me a bit, aside from the redness factor

....but that's just personal...so let's see if I get lynched for a subtle repaint job.

Just some highlights, some shadows, a soft fade in darkness away from the "magic source" and a bit of tonal difference throughout. Still love this piece though.

great pic (red tones, shmed tones - i like it), but i think i have to agree with big foot - there is something not quite right about her neck area. i think it's her collar bones. they go right to the edge of the body, and almost seem to diagonally run off the shoulder - that's kind of weird. they seem to be the wrong shape and size - and possibly the wrong position.

maybe a bit smaller, more subtle/delicate and straightened out a bit?

Just a few more comments back to folks:

replicant- I remeber that signing, alot of fun! Thanks and I'm glad you like the piece.

bigfoot- I know lots of people like yourself may have problems with some of 'comic-bookisms' on this piece, like the boobs, etc. I am trying to find a blend that will keep my publisher happy and yet be better than standard 4-color fare. I will continue to push, and I do see what you are saying.

DarkGarden- Wow, I was stunned by the difference in your overpaint! You really pushed the depth and realism up on the piece, and I think you made some excellent points. For this piece, I was going for a deliberate homage to Mucha who really didn't push depth, but that doesn't make what
you pointed out any less valid. As for being branded a 'Lee-clone', I was TOTALLY a Lee clone when I was first drawing X-Men as I thought he was the end all/be all of comic art. I guess we all pay for the sins of our reckless youth, but hey, at least I wasn't a Liefeld clone.

CrossGen is doing great, and I just got a promotion to VP. I will be stepping down from drawing a monthly title and focus on mini series where I will color and draw. I am very buzzed about that.

Kohse- Hey man, I do remeber that piece. Jes, James is coloring here and he's been a great help to me. he was the guy who first pointed out this forum, and I'm glad he did.

wus- I will have to work on losing my comic-bookisms.

dkimblad- Hmm, I am doing more of an ambient light their rather than a focused light on the underside of the rocks, though I do see what you mean. With the limited amount of value in my forced palette, I think that area under the rocks is one of those that looks especially quirky. Good point.

Nice to see another comic book guy here!

I'm Dave McCaig, colorist/painter on many of the Star Wars titles for Dark Horse, as well as one of the upcoming Mangaverse titles from Marvel (Spider-Man)

I like the style, it's nice to see such a painterly approach from a comic artist. I like the mottled background.

Anyway, hope you have fun here on the forum!
