Today I did what is most likely the stupidest thing I've ever done on a computer. 16 hours into my new painting I decided to test resize my image. I brought it down from around 4000 pixels across to about 500 pixels across to test how the image would interpolate. I intended to hit undo, but my cat then hopped in my lap. Distracted for a moment, I resumed working. I decided the colors needed to be toned down, so I created a new layer. Not quite happy with the adjustments, I decided to save the new layer for review later. Without thinking I reflexively saved the image. In the lower resolution. I realized almost instantly what I'd done.

At it's current size the image is useless to me, so I've ceased working on it. I do have an incremental backup saved at the 8 hour point, but I'm far too depressed to renew my efforts at this point --this is one of those paintings where the first half was a struggle and the last half was when it all started to come together. By my estimation this was about 1/2 done --but now it's absolutely finished. About the only good thing that can come from this tragedy is that I can still share the image with you folks.

The original study, posted in the speed painting thread.

And the final, albiet incomplete, image.

very nice ... buildings floating above trees... good feelings. Hey..what can I say.. you can just become stronger for it. You have this painting under your belt.. and you know it. Let that encourage you. ITs like... Hell... I made it.. I know I could make it again if I wanted to.. but the next time I do something it'll be better than that one.

ahhhhh neways.

Hmnn... What a bummer... I realy like the painting. Nice depth and texture.

Why didn't you just go a few steps back in your history palette? It doesn't change when you save the image! Did you close the image directly after saving?

looks awesome. great jobs.

just my subjectivity but the buildings (2nd pic) seem don't stand straight (vertical), i know perhaps it's the landscape thing (which i know nothing about). again just my subjectivity.

still, if this nice piece is to be called "tragedy", how i can't wait to see your comedy.

I've set my Photoshop to only 6 undo states to help speed it up --I've honestly never needed more than that until now. By the time I made all my adjustments the image resize had cycled out. You can bet I'm upping that number now.

Believe me, I was trying everything to get the image back. I even whipped out Norton's Utilities to try and recover the Photoshop temp file or any previously saved versions. No dice. I guess when you save it modifies the original file --leaving no old data to recover. Anyone have any ideas about using those those Photoshop temp files --or are they just useless?

Anyway, rather than letting the image go to waste, I've added some text and will use it for my website. And from now on, sequentially numbered saves for me.

That's REALLY good, I suggest you give yourself a few days or so then start working on that 8-hour pic. If this smaller one is any indication, it's definitely going to be worth the effort.

The only time I ever felt like this before was when they had to put Old Yeller down.

Seriously though, it's great work and a great shame. I hope you get the motivation to finish the piece some other time.

hmm. Well I'm not one of those traditional art types really, so I might not notice any serious hit to the analogue smoothness of the input. But I never noticed anything serious with 50 undo levels (p2 400, 256mb RAM, nice fast quantum HDD, PhSh 5.0). Truth be told, 50 is kinda excessive (a legacy from me being an almost incurable scribbler), it has saved me many times though. I guess some experimentation will show what's best for you.

Good luck anyway, the one above was looking great (not to rub it in or anything)

I'm glad someone else out there has a cat that
jumps-up on the keyboard and "screws" up work.

luckly,(so far) she hasn't caused me any
major problems.

Good save! and Good Job.
