Okay, here goes... First question, How do you guys do all those pictures that take you 10+ hours!? I can never last more than 3 hours, and if I ever do stop, I can never get started again with the same feel and ambition... Do you guys got some sort of trick?

Another question, How do you guys work under such high resolutions? (for your pictures... like I seen some 2000x2000 and even higher), personally, i am not comfortable working like that, i usually go with 800x800 or so, and zoom in alot... (lags sometimes too), i also noticed alot of u got over 200 ram, i only got 128, could that be a problem?

One more, I've been looking through alot of pictures latly, and well i just don't understand how you do the colouring soo good (realistic style, not cartoonish), if you have any advice or techniques, PLEASE!!!! post it =)

I side with shadow... I do not see how someone can spend so many hours, or days on one piece! I get bored with my own inspiration.
However, when it comes to music. I could spend an eternity on the ones and twos. I would be in heaven if I had a music studio.

Its the same thing with music.

You just sort of lose yourself in the piece. You become so involved with what the outcome will be that you work on it till its done be it 20 or even 40 hrs. Or your like me and just work on it 20 straight hrs because you waited till the deadline.haha

That sucks

uuuuuhhh. Well. I don't consider myself a fully fledged artist or anything like that. And I'm definetely not near the better half of the painters on this board, but I have spent more than 10 hours on a piece before.
One time I did about 2 hours every day or so.
One time I did about 1 hour per week. I finished the pic ten weeks later...... hehehe.
I think you just need to stretch it out and take it slow. Just be patient. Also, just try to keep yourself inspired.

As for resolution. I have no idea how they work that high. I do know that Loki uses two monitors. One for working and the other with an overall view of the pic. Your comp lags at 800 by 600? What system are you running? 128 of ram should be enough for 800 by 600.

And finally, the whole realistic approach. Well... I spent the last week or two examining heaps of paintings and images and I've been trying to figure it all out. The only conclusion i can come to is that it's all about lighting and shades of colour. Instead of drawing outlines and 'cartoony' things like that, pictures are all just made up of patches of colour. Just areas of different shades and colours and that's what makes it realistic. It sounds easy, but the problem is having the experience and basic knowledge of knowing where to place these shades and colours, this is where ppl like joachin, spooge, micke and the other good painters come in. That's my two cents on realism. Am I on the right path?

Ah well, I hope so.

nono, i dont mean my desktop resolution, i ment my picture resolution... like i tried painting at 1200x1200 once, and it was way laggy as soon as i tried using somthing other than brush tool... (like smudge, even though brush was pretty laggy itself, comparing to the lower resolutions)... for my desktop resolution, i can run 1152x864 with no problem...but i usually stick with 1024x768 (more used to it)

and for everything else... thanks, i guess i should just keep trying... I was thinking of doing some painting from reference of a photo or something, but i can never find the time, EH!!

I'm no artist, but still - the drawn-out pics? Cola, and lots of it, and a bit of masochism. And knowing you'll feel good when it's done and you can sleep again. (That or you'll realize the pic is crap and want to rip it apart, but realize it's not on paper)

Besides, lack of sleep induces a trance where you (Well, I) don't really notice what you're doing. Sometimes I just find myself painting almost instinctively, practically drooling in my lap, not thinking about a thing. Forgetting to even blink.

Lack of sleep can do other stuff, too. Last night, I thought I heard my wacom whisper to me as the pen hissed against the surface of the tablet...

As for the resolution issue, I don't really use anything but the paintbrush and the airbrush, with a bit of the occasional burn/dodge. Those don't lag too much. I think Loki posted a solution to the laggy smudge-tool problem in Digital art, though, you might want to do a search for that.

It's called positive reinforcement. There's nothing better than actually finishing something. You get the reward and want to get it again.

another thing i hate, i usually do like the main part of the picture... (like my alien on, "I'll be back", the Alien i do first and then the UFO and everything as a bg), my background turns out alot better than the picture itself =)
gehe dunno why but its always like that

Sometimes I spend 2-3 hours or even more. I then leave and come back to it in a few day... get a clearer view of it. I still correct older pieces when i look at them.

It depends what I am working on.

Sometimes I will spend an entire day working on one piece.. but not all of the time will be in the physicalness of it.

I will get up... Spin around.... take a walk... do a little more... take a shower... eat some food..

but no matter what actions I am taking, I am pondering what to do next, or how I feel..

By the end of the time I am usually so indepth in it, I want to do anything else.. which i do.
