Hi there,
I think it looks pretty good ...
But there is something about the neck ..
maybe ... the shadows on the rest of the body .. could be carried on through the "neck area" ... I dunno ..
Maybe add some darker shades inside the mouth too ?
Cheers |

It looks quite realistic. The colors remind me of a discovery channel documentary
I think the tongue/mouth area is too bright. I agree on the neck - it looks like the body and head aren't fit togeather properly |

first off, nice job labmonkey! you have guts to even attempt painting with a mouse. I never had enough. anyway, I'm noticing what everyone else notices. the colors don't match the scheme in the mouth and they are too bright. also, there is no definition in the neck. the problem is actually with the whole body. the body just looks flat. why? too much midtone and not strong enough highlights and shadows. think of the light source coming from the top right corner of the picture. what's going to be light? the top of the cats back (which is lacking a defined highlight) and the top of the cat's head (which you put in.) what's going to be the darkest spots? on the cat's neck (drop shadow from head) and on the cat's belly. you can also understand why the colors inside the mouth are too bright (is the light really going to shine directly in there or is a little bit going to get in and most of it will be dark from the drop shadow off of the roof of the mouth and the snout?) anyway, those are just some pointers. now here's some praise: the composition is terrific. I love how you had the hairs off the top of the eye and the whiskers come off into the background. the color scheme is great too. it makes the atmosphere vivid.
kudos!
I almost forgot, I did a paint-over to help you understand what I am talking about.

Frank, Good job.
But I think his original lighting source was from the Rear and top left, not the fore top right. Thats my observation. I though the top of the neck was fine, but I could not distinguish between its lower neck/body and his front legs. Also, if I interpreted the light source correctly I think this "undefined area" should have much less light than it does, that would re inforce the light source and validate the low definition in the foreground. Beatiful picture. Keep it up!

Damn this was so close to being brilliant. Trouble is, the mouth has a colour scheme too intense for the rest of the pic. The left ear seems a bit odd too. Sorry, if I seem harsh, but fix these problems and you've got a winner. |

oh gee..thx a lot! really appreciate it.
and yes, the original light source was from rear, top left. ive woked on it some, the body is still not very good, but i'll probably get back to that. anyways, i tried making the colours in the mouth less intense/a tad darker etc. kinda small update but im sick and tired of this pic so i'll put it aside for the time being. i'll get back to it later tho.
Once again, thx alot for the c&c
Oh, and heres the pic:
