Hello fellow artists.

Just stumbled over your great forum here. I�m really impressed by the quality and great creativity the images here show... !

Normaly I visit 3d forums as I love doing images in Lightwave 3D. But for a short time now, I try to learn the traditinal of art. That means try to sketch and paint 2d images.

Ever looked at the most outstanding and impressive 3d artists? They all can paint and are skilled in the "traditional arts" as well. And that can�t be (and isn�t) a coincidence...

So, although not drafted by hand, here is my first 2d artwork I post in a forum ever...
Entirely done in Photoshop.

the 3d piece is absolutely fantastic and im pretty sure 3d work has always been welcomed here, (at least as long as ive been here)

nice stuff, really interesting colors in the 3d work.

i have a question for you regarding 3d. how do you make your skins for your objects? i've been trying to do this for awhile, with no success really. im not sure what im doing wrong, so i would be interested in hearing your process.

Well,
there are some color maps,
some specularity maps (so the scratches and insets don�t shine, but the rest does)
and several bump maps (so the surface doesn�t look so smooth, and the light looks better when it hits the surface)

there is a so called "microbump" texture in the bump mapping channel as well, which simulates a minimum of chaos which can be found in any real surface, to make the texture look more realistic.
this microbump is just a very, very small (about some micrometers) procedural turbulence.

I hope this helped you a little bit.
I�m not very good doing textures. In fact, my texturing skills are quite bad. Thats why I want to enhance my 2d skills as well

All textures in this scene are procedural, except one (fairly simple) map in the bump channel.

Love the logo.. reminds me of something along the lines of an evil Apple Mac logo

hey what are you using for the glows? Actually...what 3d software is what I mean....and glows speciffically.

Oops...forgot to comment. The logo...ehh...I don't know. I'm not sure how good that would look on black and white on a business card buttttt....if it'll never get there then no worries. Also the 3d is fantastic...really

Hey there. I have to say that 3D piece is absolutely awesome !!!! I would love to see you do a 3D movie or something. Honestly looks like a screencap from some professional production.

Glad I can contribute something to this community. It�ll take some time till I can post some of the 2d artwork without totaly embarrassing myself

I use Lightwave 3D for my 3D artwork. The glow you see is partly CORONA (a plugin that ships with Lighwave) which makes special aspects of an image glow, for example everything above 80% brithness becomes glowing.
And partly Photoshop to adjust colors and emphasize this effect.

EvilAsmo : ROFL, you are right it has a similar plastic button style like the mac logo

Horstenpeter : Thank you very much. I don�t think that image is that good. Its just a quite detailed model, about 150.000 polygons (took about 2 months to complete) , a nice color sheme, some luck with the lightning and the composition, then a little bit of glow, throw away all the 500 other testscenes and renderings and you have something like this.

Thanks Tryzome...I'm a filmmaker as well So Corona...that come with L7 too? I'm using that and so far that freakin glow thing in Lightwave is screwing with me something fierce. It keeps glowing through fog light bright daylight and oversaturating my image....like. So I was looking for another solution and I was doing it with the surface values but....if that Corona works then i may try it. How much juice does it take...Ram and such? Is it heavy?

Well, its similar to Bloom except, that you have more freedom in deciding which parts of your images shall glow. For example, every texture that has a specularity setting of 80% or more becomes glowing, or depth or luminance or whatever. I think everything you can output via "buffer view" can be chosen.
Corona ships with ligthwave since version 5.5 or sooner I think, so I think it will be in LW7 as well. If not, then just copy it from an older version of LW.

Corona is a post rendering filter, so it doesn�t need ram.
The time it needs depends heavy on the screen resolution and how much is in the picture that glows in the end.
It depends on the settings you choose in corona as well, the bigger the size, the more time consuming it will be in the end.
