Okay I've decided that I'm going to buy myself a new gaming station thingy. I have a NES, Super NES, and N64. I was going to buy a PS2 and my b/f told me to wait another few months and get an X Box. I'm having trouble deciding which one to get this is what I know about the X Box:- Made by Microsoft and Sony
- Will be able to get on the net
- Has Hard drive for better games
- Has a high rez video card (higher than what HDTV 's can accept)
- Can be hacked
- Can get viruses
- can play DVD's
- Was told that you could play PC games on it (was false, but would be really cool)
- will run about the same price as the PS2
- Will have open platform
Now this is what I know about the PS2:- Already out
- Almost the same games as the X Box
- Will be getting an external and/or internal hard drives
- Capibilities of getting on the net
- Can play DVD's
- Not going to be hard to get
- has closed platform
I really don't know which to get. The games are going to run about the same price. And soon Black & White will be out for PS2... will also be out for X Box.
Anyone have any info on which would be better? Or if you have a PS2 do you like it? |

The Xbox has a huge hacking potential, so, indeed, it would be rather trivial to have PC games work on it, once a smarty pants guy out there gets his hands on one. But, I wonder how good xbox games will be in general...
The Nintendo Gamecube is also coming out at the same time as the XBox... depends what sort of games you like playing. |

PS2 already stalbished leader in the console industry with huge companies backing them up.
Oh and yeah I forgot about the cube, but it comes down to the quaility of the games, not only in the graphics dept but in the game play.
Heck, the 64 was techinically more advanced than the original PS, but we all know how that one went.

It's impossible to predict which system (PS2, Gamecube, or XBox) is going to be the winner. In the end it only matters which system has the most game support. So I would keep your head out of the fray of ignorant opinions and wait to see which systems get the best games. It's worth the wait and your money if you ask me. |

no matter how nice they make a console it will never stand up to the versatility of a good PC on the desk. |

ps2 is ugly. but that's the only "bad" thing about it. it owns x-box's ass. ps2 has established itself to be as the cool thing. x-box is flaky in every possible way.
the dvd playing capability of ps2 is good stuff. it's also ugly, which brings creditability points.
gran turismo 3, enough said. |

xbox wont be the winner because ms has got hte cash....why?. because the people will not have the cash. ( not everyone can afford to buy a second system...and there are a LOT of people who already have it.)
also. i know that its a bitch to program for ps2...but if you take it to its limits, itll reach xbox.( even with ps2s limited amount of ram ..you just have to play around a bit.)
hte quality of games is to be questioned as well.
the game cube looks promissing....and it will do better than xbox because nintendo is a sure winner in japan. ...and since everyone knows nintendo..zelda, mario, METROID!. how can they fail?.
lets see. xbox. they got abess oddesey. ( which doesnt look as good as the ones for psx1....and they got halo ( which will be out for pc...hmm...
and about the psx2 games not being good...its because they are first gen games..
wait until grand tourismo3.....metal gear solid...FF10...etc.

Choice C. The Nintendo Gamecube. It'll have Metroid: Prime, After Dark, Turok: Evolution.
Microsoft has a long history of shoving crap down the consumer's throat, so I can rule out the XBox based on that. It's also way too expensive, being at around 300 bucks. The PS2 is nothing too exciting either. It can play DVDs at poor quality and my freinds who have it tell me that it's prone to freequent crashes. One of my freinds even likes her N64 better and brings that out when we all go over to her house.
If I had to choose though, I'd choose PS2. Only because Aliens: Colonial Marines, Alien vs. Predator 2 and Jurassic Park: Survival, are all comming out for it.
I don't care at all about impressive hardware. It's the games that make the machine. |

I'm just afriad that the X-Box wil be just another PC in my room... and 'm already spending a few $'s getting up dated with my Computer so i really don't want another one. I want a gaming console. But with the PS@ I can still play Unreal Tourn, Quake II, Black and white (here soon), Age of the Empires II (don't ask), and many of the other computer games including many Play Station games.
I've stuck by Nintendo... I have all the console from them.. and the only reason I would get the new one is for Zelda, but the last Zelda game for N64 was a major let down. So I'm looking for something a tad new.
I would buy the X-Box if the "you can play PC games on it" was true... then I wouldn't have to buy games, but I'm not too into playing on line with a console because I can do that with my computer... I just want something I can play with some friends when we are just hanging out...
Went on E-Bay to see if there was any on there. 1 was for $5 when I got on. Checked it the next day and it went to $278... And it cost $299.99 in stores... I figure with the PS2 I cn go to "used" game stores and buy games forit for cheep... did it with my N64.
But the whole Microsoft putting out a gaming console has got me wondering how good will it be or are the just trying to take over EVERYTHING! |

Yo Jabberwocky!
personally I would never consider the x-box
(m$ has proven, time after time, that they
can make the best spyware for any box
connected to the net).
Nintento may suffer from choosing nonstandard media(again).
which leads down to ps2 which, quoting
some of my friends, kicks major a*s! =D
now you can only hope that the 'online-feature'
will be made by people who are serious about
their consumers wellbeing.
hope I didn't confuse you too much =)

X-Box is already pretty much selling out. Pre-orders have reached 800,000 units out of the predicted 1,000,000 that would have been released. That means MS only has 200,000 to send out to retail. I don't know what they are doing, either going to up the production or what, but they will sell.

Actually they don't, you have linux and Mac OS to choose from. If you want to blame someone for shoving stuff down your throat, blame the external application programmers. They are the ones programming on Windows.

Unreal will be available...with multiplayer support (xbox). AOE II, well it is a MS game, so I think they will make it for the xbox and I wouldn't be surprised if it was multiplayer as well.

You can't do that "play PC games" on any console...so why would that be a factor in purchasing this? This is a console not a PC. You want to play PC game, ahem, play them on your PC
The online factor isn't the expensive part of the console, but you have it if you want, unlike PS.

I think we are thinking in the box here. Microsoft isn't making the games, consoles, and hardware, are they? How many companies do they have working with them to make the games, different componants in the console. They are bringing hundreds of companies (thousands! of employees not MS) with them in the success of the x-box, so to say they are everything isn't right. They paid for the logo and name, but that is just the front end. Nvidia, just for one, is behind the shadows helping.
AND if you think a Geforce series is GOOD, just think what they can make for a System that they DON'T need to worry about compatibility issues!
Alright, done defending I just thought someone should, since most of ppl's arguments are "MS sucks cause they own everything".
Now in comparison to PS, lets go with facts instead of anger towards a company.
It is cleary X-Box will out perform then any other console out there. There game selection is growing on a daily basis and there graphic power is giving game programmers so much power that they even said it is scary what they can do!
There is a fact comparison sheet at http://www.xbox.com so I won't post that, but it just shows (hardware wise) how much more powerful it is from the PS2 and the upcoming Gamecube. The price is a little more of course, but I think it will be worth it. |

Did I ever metion "two fatso freaks?" I mentioned Turok, (one of the best selling franchises for the nintendo 64, the games that have a history of pressing the limits of it's hardware) Metroid (One of the most popular video game series ever to hit any system period) and perfect dark (you just blast the crap out of people).
When did you ever get the impression that I like those moronic little "E-rated games" where you just jump on badguys' heads? |

You still haven't covered the fact that the X-Box can be Hacked and can get viruses... And nothing has been said from MS about cleaning this fault up...
And about playing PC games on a console would be great cause then I can play them on a console saving room on my PC for my graphics and other software.
As for the X-Box I know that more than MS was working on it(but I'm not going to post the list)... I did my research. I compared and contrasted all three of the consoles (XBox, PS2, And Cube) I kicked the cube off because I wanted something different than what I have. So I was down to the XBox and PS2, but there are too many questions about the XBox.
Here's some Miuses I've found about the X-Box
quote: It's Made By Microsoft! Anybody remember Microsoft Sound System? Microsoft Bob? Microsoft has their hands in a lot of things already, and their success is hit and miss. Anybody remember how MSN was supposed to rule the world and topple AOL? It didn't even come close. Oh, and there's that little tiff the government of the United States has with Microsoft that may cause Microsoft to go splitsville. Xbox just could get lost in the shuffle.
Microsoft Has No Previous Experience with Consoles Microsoft is being thrust into an industry it, historically, has had absolutely nothing to do with. On the development side, this means that it's probably been difficult getting some developers to support the system, since they've already pledged allegiance to an old ally. Also, gaining mindshare in the hearts of consumers isn't easy. When you say "Nintendo," "Sega," and "Playstation," you think of videogames.
The Architecture of the Xbox is Basically a Stripped Down PC One problem with the Xbox sharing a common architecture with PC's is that there's potential for a lot of bad PC ports. Many PC games, even the good ones, just don't translate well to consoles. Look at Red Alert: cool PC game, but RTS's don't work nearly as well without a mouse and high resolution.
I haven't found any pluses to the XBox over the PS2 to suit what I am looking for in a gaming console. I have never played on either one, and was hoping that someone here has played a PS2.
If you could play PC games on it [XBox] I would wait and buy it hands down... just because I wouldn't have to go buy new games and would save room on my PC. I really have no need to play multi-player on-line with it because when I play multi-player on-line I play from a T3 and at LAN parties.
My b/f is pushing the XBox and my best friend is pushing the PS2! |

Jabberwocky: if i were u, i'd stick with the PS2. it seems to have the better game developers behind it, and why bother getting a console that just replicates what your comp does on a lower resolution screen? Why not get a console that will do something different than a comp?
thats why i bought a console in the first place (i own a NES, SNES, N64, PS) - it because they are different from the PC. they have different games, and the developers often go into the creating of a game with a different mindset than with a PC game. Think - the gran turismo series, the final fantasy series, beat-em-ups - all on console and the console does these games far better than a PC will. (granted, some have been ported onto the PC, but i still think the console is better for those games.)
Now, im not bagging PCs - far from it, i like PCs and their games - its just that the xbox will simply replicate the PC and most of the games that come on the xbox wil come out on PC. the PS2, on the other hand, has some great games going for it - GT3, FF10, etc - and the amount of shoddy ports of PC games will hopefully be lower than that of the xbox.
so, if its gonna be a choice between xbox and ps2, go ps2. I personally would choose a gamecube over both, but thats just my preference (i wont go into why, cos then this post will be far longer than it already is )
hopefully this has helped persuade you |

If you have Pc, why own a xbox? It's the same damn games.
And the obese plummers eating rancid fungus beats most of the crap that comes out for Pc right now. There's a reason my Nes is still plugged in my Tv. |

Every console out there your talking about. Xbox isn't providing a windows environment to hack, and simple firewall software embedded in it can take care of any hacking abilities by the multiplayer mode, if there are any.
And MS has lots of support on their back for this system, they aren't going to make it fail
gamelist: http://www.xbox.com/Games/
game publishers so far:
Activision
Bethesda Softworks
Infogrames
Lucasarts Entertainment
TDK Mediactive
Midway
THQ
Eidos
Tecmo
Konami
But I'm not a salesman, heres what you do (if you have the patience) wait till Xbox is out, let it get reviewed for a couple of months and see which is better.

sounds like you have a crappy computer then if you can't play anything but super mario brothers..........

I like that statement, u just named every console out there, but the xbox is only limited by the TV resolution, HDTV will be able to see Xbox's power, PS2 won't.

MS never said that, they said they wanted to put a dent in AOL AIM domination.

they are MS , I am sure they can afford getting developers on board, and gaming developers look at $$...so no problem there.

gamecube is the N64 beefed up. No compatibility with their older systems....which was their mistake with the N64, so looks like they will be making that mistake again.
I am not even looking foward to the Cube, which at the E3 it was visited the most, but that was only because it was really the first time it was seen live. The xbox was seen live for awhile before and that is why it wasn't visited much. But the game selection is going to hurt them again. |

I guess I've changed my mind about the game cube. It would seem that Nintendo is now displaying their same platform arrogance as usual. I'm going to wait untill next year to buy anything anyway, then I'll get whatever system has the coolest3-D shooters. Even though I hate microsoft, I have to admit, HALO looks pretty damn cool. ...You know, for a game that's made by an evil empire who's only goal is to take over the world and suck our brains out. |

Playstation 2 -
Graphicwise - it uses a lot of custom shatz, which is very good and very bad. Good in that it can pump lots of polys into a scene. Good in that custom effects have to be created instead of 'filters' and the effect of people actually working to make the graphics good will blow you away. Bad is that all this is very hard to use, plus has some major limitations.
Developer supportwise - The best. Right now. Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy 10, Tekken 4 - all the real big name shit. However the first year of the console has been crappy with mostly bad and boring games, and the really good stuff is all off in the future. Factor in that the PS2 is hard to develop for, and you could have Sony's only real ace in the hole, the most developer support, lost to the other consoles. That's a huge unpredictable though. It really could happen. But it really might not.
X-Box
Graphicwise - in theory, it annihilates the competition. In theory, it can run such high res textures, high poly counts, and custom effects, that it's just on a whole different level then the others. Some of this splendor will undeniably be achieved, but it has not been shown to the public yet in working form. And that's a huge issue. Microsoft did the first public demo'ing of the X-Box at the E3 convention, using computers to simulate the system, and the performance and overall showing was so bad that Microsoft literally turned away much of the industry from their console. So what will the reality be then? Can they get their act together by launch and suddenly have a magical supersystem? Many people are understandbly doubtful.
Developer support - ok. lot of interest from upstart developers. but the big guys are all starting to agree that Microsoft's console will be an embarrassment and failure and are staying away.
Game Cube
Graphicswise - Middle of the road. Very tightly balanced, so you'll get high framerates, medium res textures probably and medium res poly counts probably. Not the same sort of powerhouse as the other consoles, but it does do quick a few neat effects. The advantage is that it is a very easy console for developers to program
Developer support - remember how Nintendo lost everyone with the N64? They are still in the position of having to get them back.
So which to pick?
Honestly, I would stay far the hell away from buying a new console this fall unless you are quite certain at that point of what will become of it in the following year. All the consoles are in a defensive position right now, PS2 is dull and game and console sales of it are slowing, and Game Cube and X-Box both have to beg for initial acceptance. Unless a lot of news is uncovered regarding the futures of these consoles, they are all a gamble and you could be tossing $300 for the PS2 or X-Box or $200 for the GCN. |
