I got the chance to have a go with Painter 7 today for the first time for an hour or so, and came up with this little sketch (it's from a photo I had laying around of my niece Jillie - she didn't really know me at the time of the photo and was a little wary of me as her expression depicts, "who is this guy that looks and sounds just like my Dad?").
I didn't really get a chance to play with all the media, but was amazed at how realistic the makers tried to be with not only the look, but the behavior of the paint,..er. brushes, er. pixels....you know what I mean.
It was kinda frustrating working with the program at first (I can FLY on photoshop - hotkey ace), the interface seems kinda cluttered, but once I figured out the basics it went pretty fast. Although I really only learned how to hotkey the eye-dropper and resize the brush.
In any case, I liked what I saw and will probably look into gettin' a copy for myself. Are there any good user-sites that you guys know of, other than this one, that deal specifically with Painter and working with it i.e. what cool things can be done with it, how to get around the interface? Let me know.

Awesome painting. I figured it'd look better with more contrast, so I saved it and opened it with Photoshop6. I used the auto-contrast thing to your drawing, hope ya don't mind. Anyways, here's your drawing w/ contrast.

You're right, it does look better with more contrast. The original painting does have more contrast, but for some reason it didn't carry over to the .jpg I generated in Painter - don't really know what those HTML compression options mean, so I mighta screwed 'em up. However, your version has even more contrast than I did originally and I think it works better (yours, I mean). I'll see if I can figure out how to adjust it in Painter tomorrow,...I know it's a cinch in PS, but I'll try to struggle through it with Painter.

Hey folks!
Here's a little update on the sketch of Jillie (we call her Jillie-Bean). Now that I'm hot on doing portraits, I was flippin' through a book on Sargent (truly amazing stuff) and decided to make my sketch a little moodier, as follows:
I'm working pretty small on this one (500x700), but notice that when I jump to large sizes (2500x3500) the brushes slow down to a crawl! I have a fairly beefy computer (256 Mb of RAM & GeForce 2 Ultra 64), is there something I'm missing? Anyone know of any tricks to make Painter a little snappier at higher resolutions? Let me know. Thanks!

Just getting more ram, alas. Painter is even more ram hungry than photoshop as far as I've observed. I have 256 megs here too and it gets horribly lagged when I'm working at large sizes. You can also try working with a smaller brush but it is still just ick. She looks soooo much better with a background in there! |

now you should know to do this while painting plus you could use contrast in a painting to indicate the subject (by making the background more uniform and the subject stand out with harder shadows and highlights) |

Only one thing bugs me with the new version, the shadow areas on the cheecks seem way too red for her to be a dark greenish enviroment, well, actually the cheek-areas look a bit too red all in all. That said, great work! |

Very nice, especially the last one. Reminds me of that hair tutorial Linda did back in the day. |
