Well...here's my best portrait painting yet. And who would have known it would have been of Miss Spears herself? Anyways, I would appreciate critiques, flames, banishments to hell, or whatever!

BTW, her lips on my painting really bug me...I need to fix that.

that doesn't look like britney spears at all, more like a glen close and martha stewart mix

I'm sure it's because of the lips, though...as I said I was bothered by them. They look more like an old individual's than Britney's (which is probably where you get than Glen Close/Martha Stewart thing). I'm sure everything else is correct. Will go back to the drawing board (or tablet, in this case!)

You seem to have a lot of lines in your drawing. Start with larger brushes rather than squiggly lines to convey a more realistic three dimensional form. Also there are some anatomical issues. Find a good tutorial on the proportions of the head.

Art Addiction...let me start off by saying that I commend you on your efforts. A lot of people will trace a picture of someone and then say that they "painted" a portrait. Tracing is ok for practice, but I think that you gave it your best shot using your eye and for that I commend you.

There are definitely some fundamental anatomy issues. I took the liberty of putting your image next to the photo reference and marking the discrepencies.

In part A, notice the distance from the portrait eye to the eyebrow vs. britney's. Yours is much shorter and therefore indicates a lack of depth to the eye socket making the eyes appear flat.

Part B. the corner's of the mouth should line up (usually) with the center of the eyes. In your portrait notice that the lines aren't parallel but actually taper down toward the mouth. Compare that to the lines on Britneys face.

Part C. the space between the nose and the lips (also known as the philtrum) is much too long on your portrait. Also, pay attention to the positioning of the lips. The center of your top lip is straight down from the center of the nose. in the photo, it's slightly to the left.

Part D. Be aware that with the tilt of the head, the orientation of the eyes should match the angle of the tilt. In your portrait, the eyes are still a little bit too horizontal.

Part E. The distance from the bottom lip to the chin. The chin in your portrait is much too round and large. Britney has a very crisp and petite chin.

Part F. Also tying in with part E, the side of the face does not mimic that of Britney's. Take note of her cheekbone. Yours is much too pronounced. It needs to be more subtle. Also, her face curves gently down to meet her chin. In your portrait, It's rounded only at the top near the cheekbone, and then flattens out alongside the mouth.

I realize I just hit you with a lot of stuff, but I think that you definitely have the foundation, and with some practice could improve exponentially.

Just remember, everything has a relationship to the other elements. Map out the face very generally first, and check all your relationships. Once you have a solid starting point, the rest becomes easier.

Hope all this drivel helps

Good Luck!!!

Thanks to everyone for the comments. Johnny -- that was a very helpful critique! I'll start work on a new version of this one tonight.

Okay...actually...I'm working on a different portrait of Miss Spears. Just got kinda tired of the last one. And after following Johnny's advice...this one is MUCH MUCH better so far. Can't wait to post it! Watch for a new thread in the next couple days.
