Hey
How are you all today? I am fine.
Here are some quick sketches of various robot heads. What I was going for was not specific character designs per se, but designing a series of robot heads that would give the impression of certain expressions or emotions. Admittedly most of these are anger or some variation thereof, but ya gotta start somewheres.

Your full of it the_monkey.
I think the drawings are neat.
esp the robot in the middle left of the "poor impulse control" one.
Cool |

I like the multiple eye bots personally. The one in the upper right is my favorite, though. Has a Wizard of Ozish feel to it...

ooh.
long time no post, Francis
These are all slick designs and they look like they'd have some personality.
I really like the 6-eyed head at the top and the "poor impulse control" one made me laugh.
Does the leftmost head have a ponytail of cables & wires? Nice idea if so
That's all I have to say. Nice to see you back!

nice, itchi. i like that they don't all look like masks, which is to say, don't look like they don't have human heads in them. i like that flat profile one best. big-chin and poor-impulse-control are next. i suck at mecha, so you make me jealous. |

Nice work Franics. I love your drawings.
It looks like you had great fun doing them. I had good fun looking at them. They are really cool.
EXO: I think you misunderstood The_Monkey. I think he meant he couldnt see it, meaning it wouldn't show up on the screen. Anyways you shouldn't jump down his throat even "if
" he is actually saying he doesn't like it, then it would be his opinion and he was hardly being nasty with his words. |

OMG!!
The one in the can only be a warrior/stalker of the night...I'm frightened...
Impulse guy, is violent but also friendly, I think....Looks great.
I dunno if I want to see them coloured, they work very well like this....nice!

Francis man, those rock
I can tell you have a very strong feel for shapes. I don't really think they all look like anger tho...The last one definetly looks like anguish to me. The middle one looks like pride and the one right next to him to the left looks like mischief.
Just my opinion though
BTW, what's a good source of references to practice mechanical shapes? such as mechs, vehicles, etc?
very nice work!!

Thank you for the replies. I have a lot of stuff like this, but this was the most user-friendly.
the_monkey - sorry it was a typo in the code.
exo - thanks, that line is actually from Snow Crash, one of my favorite cyberpunk books.
jr - thanks
Waldo - uh? what wizard of oz character? That's an interesting take..
manik_monkei - thank you; good to be "back." Yah, cables and things for a ponytail.
Shiro_tengu - tengu very much, ahahaha.
Artgolem - thank you very much, but I am not itchi, although I am flattered by the misnomer.
quasar - thanks!
Fallen - cool, me too.
Belisarius - yes, Shirow is a bit of an influence on me for sure.
Ian - yup, this is how I relax.
Corn Pops - you should see me in person.
Sukhoi - thanks for the interpretations. Yeah, probably won't color these..
Cicinimo - thank you, I'm currently wrestling with this line thing; sometimes feels like it locks me into a certain style.
Rampage - thank you glad you like this. As far as reference for mechanical stuff - one good approach is to look at anything non-mechanical, and reinterpret it as a mechanical object. None of these guys really look like anything industrial or engineered that you'd see today - mostly very organic shapes, but detailed to look mechanical. Hope that makes sense. |

Francis: You, sir, could rival Masamune Shirow in terms of sheer style.

Very, very nice.
I really like the top right one.
I'd love to see one of these fully rendered.

Francis it sure does make sense man. But what you said, I believe, is more of a tip on how to come up with designs for robots, etc. What I was asking, is a good reference to practice mechanic shapes, how they connect, etc...something more on the technical side. The tip you gave does help tho..thanks =) |

I just asume you have read Alita, cuz i think the "hedz" have a very manga-ish feel to them due to certain style-thingies like the random holes the shape of the head etc.
But they sure look great anyway, one reminds me of a character named Den in Alita |

the 6 eye'd one reminds me of either a helmet in the anime "Gasaraki" or "Ghost in the Shell". |
