ok, this one took me a long time to finish.
at least 10 hours... perhaps 12 or so.
my longest painting so far...

I'm pretty happy with the wing, but noticed that I suck when it comes to drawing mountains....bah.

!!!harsh critique would be desirable and taken seriously. I can throw in a few details if asked.

i really like it and the mountains are fine thought there are some weird anomalies there but the main prob is the angel guy doesnt seem to look like its part of the painting looks like cut out

i agree, you did the seraph on a separate layer, didn't you? somehow the mountains look really close and small, as if it was only a small stream just below his feet, rather than a mighty river. it also doesn't help that you have dark outlines around his limbs, they kind of lift him out the picture.

but i can appreciate the time you spent on it, his muscles and feathers look fabulous. the mountains look pretty good too, although not quite 'real'. maybe look at craig mullin's mountains, they're amazing.

That is one awesome pic, palladia mors. The mountains look kinda nice and the figure is maginificent.

I just miss some sort of fog between the figure and the landscape, nothing else.

Hi,

That is a beautiful painting, has a great feel to it, forms are very structured and solid. Here are my crits:

1. Use a little atmospheric perspective to separate the background from the figure. The farther things get, the hazier, blurry and tonal. Don't keep everything in focus.

2. His left hands needs a little more development, gets a little bit confusing. Especially when the rest of the figure is so well rendered out.

3. The wings. This is just a personal opinion, but I'd make them alot bigger, maybe give the impression of flight and/or movement. Look up references of pigeons flying.

4. You could play around with selectively adding color, I know it's a limited pallet piece, but maybe with subtle hints of color here and there you could direct our eyes around the plain.

Great painting.

Ditto on the atmospheric perspective. The background is far sharper and more detailed than the subject. Either pick up some sharp details on the figure or tone down the BG by blurring or make the values softer.

Eh, easier to show than to type.

Hot stuff though.

Very cool man...one thing that bothers me is I think you should have the water in the background look more like water it looks like a field of snow. I relize that whe the river runs down a valley it would have that rushed white water effect but not the big body of water in the background. Maybe reflecting some of the skys color or detail would help pull it together?

all right, I updated the pic.
thx for the replies, by the way.
there was a layer that you can see now before but I messed it up a bit and it didn't show on the pic I posted. anyway, I tweaked it a little and made a few adjustments here and there.

...any better? what do you guys think?
maybe the atmospheric effect could be more dramatic, methinks.

You've got a nice theme going here palladia.

I'd agree w/ tdl on adding some other colors. Right now it's very nearly monochromatic. There's not really anything wrong with that but I think this piece could benefit from a wider range of color.

Also, I feel my eye being sucked over to the left.. the picture feels a little off balance with the big wing on the left and open space to the right of the figure. Maybe bring some wing/feathers on the right side of him or pull his arm away from his body?

Anyway.. whatever. Just throwing out suggestions which you can heed or ignore at your will. I like this piece in addition to your other winged characters.

Great Image! I agree with Quasar about the water looking like snow. One other thing, I think seraphs traditionaly have six wings.

I think the mountains are the greatest I've ever seen. Very real. I like the angel as well, but I think they don't "talk" tp each other too good, since they are too different styles. Mountains=photoreal Angel= stylized

I still love it tho, since those styles together combine to something completely new
