Compositionaly, the guy in lower corner kind of seems too close to the corners. You might want to look for a more rule of thirds place to put him.

Color wise, the greenish water, blending to the blue seems too much tonal change to me. The green tint I always associate with algae or river water, and the clean blue with tropical seas...if you look at some classic ocean scapes, there is sometimes more color harmony.

worth thinking about anyway...

nice indeed

ok, call me a newbie, but how do you render a picture in PS?

cant come up with much crits, maybe the left arm (in my view) is a little wrong prop. and the staff should've been a few pixels to my right, but i dunno

love it. as said earlier, if that's not the finished one, i can't wait to see the finished one!

That test painting is awesome. Would you be interested in working on a FPS that will have its own engine?

*thumbz up*

it's really nice to see 'big-range' magic without superspiffy glowy effects... kinda sick of the FF look. really nice.

Thanks all!

bob: no filters (rarely use them), paintbrush with soft edged brushes of various sizes.

anthony: the figure was the last thing to do and quickly added to a layer. Um... I'll probably not do a finished version of this, it's just a render(ing) test. However, you might see similar stuff I've used here in my works in the future.

nori: "test render" or a "render test" is a painting where I test combining different styles & textures. Kind of experimental stuff. The text is there for a purporse, for that no-one mistakes this to a finished painting.

cyberlink: well, I'm not quite satisfied with the colour balance & contrast but I'll be working on it.

balistic: the character took me about 25min to finish, including fixes to the ground to fit it in. You are definitely right it isn't cool.

quasar: moses ate my horses!!

robert: you're positive that the "RIPELLY RENDER TEST" text fits nice? Heh... I'll try to come up with something cooler next time.

kromosom: o_

marc_taro: Yes, I was aware of the compositional issues with the character, he's too close to the edges. Thanks for noting that. I'll be sure to find some reference photos next time when working on seascapes.

metz: by "rendering" I mean painting textures on surfaces. You can also use filter rendering but that's another case. I'll be posting something more interesting next time...

defiant: i'm not so eager to get involved with any projects right now, got no time. But if you have a some info about the FPS on the net i'd like to take a look.

mr. t: actually, i removed a chain of gigantic lens flares around the character before uploading this... j/k

gpoodle: this is a test allright. The reason i've posted this is to see if people have some constructive comments about stuff in it. Comments about "The lightning arcs amongst the whateverthatis look crappy because of the colour" is what I like to hear... there's really no need to praise it in any way.

shizo: *phew* For a moment I thought you had your own opinion! But read above, same goes to you.

This is a wonderful rendering, Ripelly. I think your painting style really shows where oil paintings stop and digital painting keep going. I'm looking at the bottom of those waves in awe, wondering if it's possible to produce that kind of quality of colour on canvas.

The lightning looks unusual as purple when it's leaving blue glows on the clouds. I'm tempted to say they should be pure white, but would that draw too much attention.

At first I thought the character had his back facing the viewer, but on closer view, I can see it's his front. He should have much more of a backlight from the moon to fit into this scene.

This painting turned out as test render after a landscape experiment I had worked on went horribly wrong.

I give you freedom of speech on this, harsh C&C will be appreciated. Thanks.

Used 12+ hours with PS 5.5.

well if thats a test, i wonder what your final would look like ?

i like it
good use of colour
its got a good variety to it.

i don't know about the little figure though, he looks a little mal-proportioned.

you should throw up a tutorial when your finished your final...tell us how you go about doing it.

what's a test render?

I think it kicks ass except for the text across it. Very distracting and annoying. colors are very well done!

maybe some stonger lighting on the character would give him more strength.

paltsi: photoshop 5.5. I just picked the colours randomly... i guess. (heh, en oikeen tied noista assyist, monta kertaa on ollu tarkotus menn kymn mutta ei vaan ole tullu menty. en tss vaiheessa uskalla sanoa osallistumisesta viel mitn.)

highfive: thanks, but i still have much to learn with the colours (among other things). Your remark on the character is probably correct, yes. Hmm... moon?

Very cool, except for the pose of the character . . . he looks stiff and flat . . . you might consider making it look like he's bracing himself against the wind, leaning into it with one foot in front of the other.

Hy, very cool picture, i love the rendering of the waves.

Did you make it in gradual steps or put the final colors and blended them ?

Two sugestions: perhaps if the stone were emitting light it would make the charater more powerfull and emphathise the magical powers in use, and secondly, loose the text, it is realy anoying.
