I don't know that you guys need to worry about who is or isn't in the first "fifteen". Do the work and send it to him. I'd imagine that "signing up" was more of a "do what i say here and send me the results" thing than saying "me too" in the thread.
i know if i've got time later today i'll give it a shot. |

I've done a few exercises like this before. This should be fun.

Anyway, looks like i'm one of those unlucky 4985 eh?
Stating the obvious: I think 15 is a good amount of people to look at. Everyone should be following along, even if they're not getting professionally critiqued. Just look at the pictures that were critiqued, compare them to yours, read comment, fix fix fix.

You know I'm in if you want me(you and Fred helped me so much in the past as I improved 1000% in painting). My background is in 3d, so I'm gonna try the assignment here regardless. Great you're doing this Spooge, enjoying Hawaii?
Welp, here's mine. It was fun figuring out the shadows, I'm glad I did. I shouldn't have shaded the ground around the front cube's bottom edges, that looks lame!
I wish I had gotten a less "dynamic" cube set, these ones are so distorted.

It's me again. I found out how to get the hight of the second cube (I was just to stupid). If anybody has the same problem I'll be able to explain now .
Spooge: Are the files listed in your incoming section when transfered? I just tried to send a file but it did't work I think. The file did't apear in incoming. Did you get it? Sorry it's the first time I use ftp . |

edit2: I guess i didnt make it, but i also come up with this idea for the people who didnt make the first 15 post. How about give some of them a mark grades instead of any critique at all , like
A - Excellent
B - Very Good
C - Average
D - Need more pratice
E - Need alot of improvement
F - I hate you

Heya spooge,
Being the idiot student I've always been in the past I just realized that after uploading my first assignment I was to make the cubes the same size. (please feel free to slap my hands with a very large ruler) I'll correct the mistake asap. Thanks for holding these lessons sponge.

Hey Spooge,
I've been beating my head over this perspective thing for hours now.... I have a few questions... Are you using 2 horizon lines?
I amtempted disecting your example. It looks like your using 2 horizon lines with 4 perspective vanishing points.
I attempted to follow that example... I made the two boxes on seporate angles but for some reason it just looks all wrong.
I'll upload my sketch for you. Please verbally blast me if possible to tell me how wrong I am ;-) hehe...

First, id just thank spooge for gettin this started again, last time i never really participated but i did go outside and draw a cube i made out of bristolboard..
2nd, ill give myself a few critiques, I 'think' the tops are too dark, the cubes arnt exactly perfect, i got alittle lazy i think.
uh ill leave the rest up to the demon or anyone else...
edit: oh yea is this supposed to be natural or artifical light/?

Burnout...are your cubes..aliasing? =] I ended up using a sort of close spotlight for mine, although I'd be lieing if I said I knew what was gonna pop out of where I placed the light. I just wanted the shadow to fall there on the other cube. |

I'm not quite sure it worked, i uploaded my file to the FTP like you said Spooge, but i cant see it ...
I post it here too in case ...
the crop is crappy, i only saw that the file needed to be 600*400 after drawing it, so i had to show some of the "sky" |

Anthony, hmmm aliasing? not exactly sure what you mean, but when i used the selection tool i took off anti-aliasing because it was turning out to soft on the edges.
i guess you mean those little cuts in the cube, the left one looks like i didnt go straight down when selecting! looks like i did that on the other one too in the shadow.. bleh!
the top of the right one is all jagged for the same reason, i guess i shouldnt have unchecked it.
yea i didnt know where my shadow's were going to go either, now that i see it again, it looks like the right shadow is too light?
edit: mime yours look great! (to me )
edit2: Hmm I dont understand what aspect ratio of 2 to 3 means spooge. Also i didnt realize there was a size limit, but mine isnt on your server anyways...(but if you want to save it your going to have to rename it to .jpg)

I have a problem, and I don't know if I should post the pic here or upload it to spooge... (so I put it here)
My left cube doesn't look cubic! I constructed it "by the book" (that web page), and I thought I was just seeing wrong. When I began shading, it became even more obvious. What's wrong? Or isn't it?

I think it has to do with how close to your cubes your camera is in relation to how big the cubes are. The farther your camera, the wider the perspective points, and the less distorted the cubes look. |

If people are having problems with the construction method on Francis Tsai's page, there is another less complicated yet less exact method to contruct cubes in two point perspective.
Draw the horizon and set your vanishing points (they are really close in this example just for clarity). Draw the leading edge of your cube, and take the top and bottom points of the leading edge back to the vanishing points.
Then bisect those angles exactly in half (done here in red lines). If you have a protractor or something this is easy, otherwise eyeball it. You know you have it correct when the points where the red lines intersect the top and bottom edges line up vertically. Use those points to draw the back vertical edges. Then draw lines to the vanishing points to complete the back edges.

there is always only one horizon line in a painting (the eyelevel).
but as you've noticed, spooge uses 4 vanishing points, 2 for each cube. don't forget that his cubes are NON parallel, so their parallel edges (2 groups of prallels on each cube) converge (is this a word? no time to take out dicitionary... ) in one point each. makes 4 vanishing points! i hope this is understandable... |

shawncollette: if you read the tutorial that spooge provided a link to you can use that method to draw two cubes with non-parallel sides in perspective. What you might have problems with is to get the height of the second cube.
What I did to solve this was to draw a line (in the top view) between one edge of the first cube to one on the other cube. Then make a line that is parallel with the line between the two edges but this time start from the station point and keep on going until you cross the picture plane. By drawing a vertical line from this crossing down to the horizon you get a vanishing point you can use to determine the height of the second cube in the perspective view. Draw two lines that go from this vanishingpoint and past the top and bottom of the edge that you chosed for the first line in the top view of the cube you've been able to draw in the perspective view. Where these two lines cross the vertical line that mark the chosen edge of the second cube in the perspective view you got the top and bottom of that edge.
This might not make much sense without a picture and I have no idea if it's the easiest sollution to the problem (would be grate to see how nil900 solved it). |
