24+ hours. No reference used except with the MP5 in her right hand.
This painting was mainly a render/lighting test on different textures and I'd like to hear your comments on them. I left my Loomis book in my other pants so please try to bear with the weird stance and anatomy... kthx! |

*silent* WOW
The only critique I can think of is that it looks like the women is pasted on a background....it doesn't seem to interact....she's not one with the background....somehow it looks like it's not one piece.
But then again: WOW. |

Heh.. thanks for the comments so far. *hands out a paper bag to Beth*
I'd like to drop a quick note that this was done completely in photoshop (5.5), and my thanks goes to ax0 and kig(ilmari) who helped me out giving quick crits and ideas in the process of making this painting. You guys rock. \m/ |

Wow, this is soo cool!!
Kinda looks like Max Paynes sister..
I just love that background.. all the materials looks awesome!!
perkele!
The only thing for crit is the legs..
hmm.. I suck at explaining in english so
I did a quick overpaint to illustrate what can be improved... hope you don't mind..
Overpaint
I made more female forms of the legs.. I might have exagerated a bit..
My overpainting looks horrible, but I hope you can see what I mean..

Good work! The rendering of the surfaces and materials looks great. I agree with McVirusS, there is something inconsistent in the lighting. You already mentioned the mild stance weirdness so I won't continue on that.

Thanks everyone, I'll be commenting more a bit later!
Spooge, I'm more than glad to give you permission to tear this piece to shreds! Can't wait to see what you've got there...
And I wouldn't mind if everybody else brought out their magnifying glasses, too... let's hear some crits, shall we?

I don't have time to write a proper crit at the moment, but I will when I get home tonight.
I just wanted to say that Ripelly, you have a very inspiring attitude towards art. The fact that you are able to accept criticsm as a positive and not a negative says a lot for your character. Some people don't have that confidence. Good show, ol' chap! |

ok. her pants look like made from lead. looks like there's a strong backlight but she is overally lighted from frontside. composition isn't good either, monotonic actually and picture is lifeless more or less. I'm not spooge but giving best i can. Technique is the thing i love. maybe little thinking about composition and more natural stance and lighting in the next painting.. and we have a masterpiece.

Do you think it might be possible to see the full resolution version, Ripelly? I'd really love to analyze your strokes (and get a new wallpaper) |

Nice rendering...
some crits...
1. Lighting is a bit off... from that big white spot on the background it looks as if there is a light hanging on the wall soo what is her face soo highlighted...
2. She looks stiff and lifeless.. looks like she is an over grown plastic actic figure in a warehouse or something. Putting her in a more natural stance And giving her less of a neutral expresssion on her face should fix that..
3. Her right leg ( our left) looks broken. I mean its going in an angle and then the calf or the bottom leg is goin in an opposite angle. Its impossible to get that bottom leg in that angle if the foot is flat on the floor. She would probably have to be standing on the side of her foot ( Hope you can imagine what i just explained)
4. Personally i would try to avoid symetrical back grounds. Look at the pipes ... also what are the CHANCES that she is RIGHT in between them... too symetrical for me... Make it more interesting.. maybe adding somethign else but pipes ....
Thats all for now. Finally Nice would on this i cant wait to see your other pictures of the same calibur =)... Very nice.. Maybe next picture try to do it faster and do it in less than 23 hours =).... |

minor 'crits'
- I'm surprised by how reflective that floor is
- her face is looking more cartoony than the rest |

Very nice..
I don't know if I'm the only one that noticed but her neck seems a tad to long or cylindrical like. The neck doesn't really go straight up like that, theres a few muscles in there. Also I think u might be able to see a hint of her ears with that kinda hair style, not fully lit but just a suggestion of them. Theres something strange going on with her eye brows and the space between her eyes, don't think it would really look like that. But I kinda like it the way it is...
great work, keep it up |

Ummm......
*looks in dictionary*
Awesome!!!
Realistic looking metal, the background's what I love best. The girl does seem a bit "pasted" in. Maybe it's just the lighting on her. *shrug* I'm still learning.
Other than that.... DO MORE!!! Eye candy's always good stuff. |

I think you've done a very nice job. i like the reflections on the ground very mouch. ALso, her shoe looks very planted to the ground, I like that !
Maybe her pose is a bit stiff, in my opinion. But, esp. I think the face could be improved a bit. It looks very flipped and with lack of expression.
But, I really like the picture ! |

I can't provide 1:1 version, it's simply too big.
Detail Ein (the face and the gas meter)
Detail Zwei (MP5 and the floor)
Beth, you're overrating the image, antcha? *pokes*
McVirusS: I really didn't give a deep thought about the composition, if that'll do for a poor excuse. I have to do my homework with making things "work" together, yes. Thankyous.
Gordillo: \m/ Muchos gracias.
Ripellys: wtf?? next...
DiXter: Yes, Remedy has my deepest respect. Yes, the overpaint you did shows clearly a better approach to the problem I had with the balance and movement, but I really have to point at the Loomis disclaimer under the picture *points* *nods*
Halogenic: I pray that the green monkeys are pleased. The blurred reflections; artist's laziness or a cool effect? Only god knows.
Thanks.
GoldenBoy: I have two different WIP stages saved, but I don't think they have any artistic value whatsoever. Hmm.. no. I'm not posting them.
...about your second post (with a bunch of good crits), the light comes from um.. i'm not sure of the word, a long tube lamp in the ceiling (putkivalaisin) whose other end is right above her head. The pants are a frustrated result after twenty attempts of finding a satisfactory stance. Her anatomy? *finger points to the disclaimer* But thanks for the comments, Mika!
saripol: the background seems to have a lot of fans.. hmm... thanks!
Rhomb: thanks, I think I've discovered a method which helps rendering the textures _very_ much. Basically it's about using alpha channels, quickmask and layer blending options combined with random experimenting... you have a cool first name by the way.
Ah, I replied to you already, Spooge.
Corn Pops, really? No... i'm just .. no. Heh. In fact, I've been quite confused lately, but thanks man. I'll appreciate this.
wigin:
1. see what I answered to GoldenBoy.
2&3. see the disclaimer (I know, I'm cheap)
4. the chances are that she's posing to a dead photographer, heh. The original plan had a bunch of crows flying from behind her, and some crates alongside the wall.
I'll try do better and faster next time. Just wait and see!
hovair: you go and paint. Thanks!
geelimp: The Red Boots? They are more than just an ordinary pair of boots. On the crits: the floor is um.. waxed. Yes. That's it. About the face, I've heard that comment on it before, yes, but thanks.
Aiko Ito: I find it interesting how some people are freaked out looking at the face (hi Denim!) but some like it. Thanks.
Tarandon: superior quality? hmm.. I can't disagree with your comment on the chain. I think you got me there. Thanks.
burnOut: \m/ I hate anatomy!
t4fF: I know, thanks. |

MetalSoul: Thanks, I will do more. \m/
Joachim, thank you very much. I didn't flip the face if you meant 'mirrored' by it, but I use 'flip canvas' a lot. And again, yes, I'll be working on the faces and anatomy in general. |

shit ripellys believe it or not its damn good son !!
i think it interacts with the background
because of the bullet shells on the ground
PLEASE POST A TUTORIAL !
how did you do the floor?
how does one make textures and use them?
im lost when it comes to this
i just know how to clone photos and splotch it around an area to create a textury feel
e.g. taking a brick wall from a photo,
create a real wall in one of my artwork pieces, and splotch the brick wall photo
into my piece to create texture.
how does one really do it ?? |

When artists produce work of this superior quality, I tend to start being a jack ass about criticism. Most of my initial thoughts have already been acknowledged, the chain however, with the hook, seems to start bending too soon at the bottom. It's hard to explain. It need to fall in a sharper elipse fashion then it does.... more like a v than a u. ya know? Ach.
Just a thought. Stellar job otherwise, just stellar! |

Anthony: i'll post some notes of how I work as soon as I get my website up and running. And about the floor, I painted it by hand using some alpha channel tricks.
Thanks.
ax0: *nod*
Khaifin: no, you're not a dork, heh. That's MP5K PDW alright, but it is MP5 at the same time. Can you imagine? kthx |
