i posted this one in the "speed painting" thread, but i must admit that it took me too much time (1h40) to call it a speed painting.
it's more a "lunchbreak-painting".
i apologize !

Those bluish strokes in the face creates very realistic wrinkles. I like it!

I'm surprised at the lack of over-the-top fan boy praise actually.

Personally this needs a !!O!M!F!G!!
Does nobody see the mastership here?. 1-40min...???.

Friggen spastically amazing suny. Be my guest and post some more.

Too right! It's total jaw-dropping material!

The texture, mood, lighting, proportions and the depth-of-frigging-field all work together so well. And this was done in 1hour 40 minutes?

Could you please post the photo reference you used, suny, if you did use one?

The mustache and those eyes make the piece.

Everything, in my eyes, seems to compliment everything so well.

Awesome.

Wow, suny, this is absolutely amazing. Very very very well rendered. The reflected blue light adds a lot to the piece. Once again, this is very nice. No critiques from me.

WOW! All I have to say that the texture of the face is AWESOME. A lot of parts (eyes, mustach, etc.) do make this piece. Are you planning on finishing this or leave it as is? yeah, wow.

thanks everyone!
it's an old picture i did 3 years ago, so i guess it will stay unfinished (the hat and the background are rather rough..).
my goal was to work quickly, stay fresh, and to use only brushes (no filters, no textures in overlay, no dodge/burn).
Highfive: i used a reference photo, but it was from a book i don't own.

a little tutorial:

first, i did a quick sketch in dark colors of the head, over the pink background. you can see that it's not very good, (the mouth is even very bad), but the eyes are almost there with some rapid black strokes.
with another layer between the background and the outlines, i put some colors: one for the hat, one for the skin, with a very large brush. they're the midtones of the head, and the choice of those colors are very important. So, very quickly i had the essence of the image: the darktones and the lighttones on a layer, and the colors and the midtones on another.

after that, it's easy to add details, and to blend the colors (it's easy if the beguining is good: often i start to add details over a crappy image, and it morph into a crap with details. so i put more details over it to hide the errors and... i delete the file. Don't hesitate to correct your errors before the total-waste-of-time phase...) . I use a lot (a lot !) the alt key (the color picker on photoshop) to blend colors: i do a stroke of color, i pick a midtone between the stroke and the background, and i do another stroke, and so on. I use a lot the color window too, in RGB mode (because i'm used to RGB, it's a bad habit from the old deluxe paint days), to modify the colors i picked.
I put the 3rd layer alone on the right, so you can see that i used some fairly large brushes, but it worked, this is enough to improve the painting dramaticly.

and so on, and so on... blending the colors... i put a detail of the final image, so you can see that the result is rather rough. They are not a lot of different hues and values, everything is coherent with the background (so the pink wrinkles), and it's very simple. the moustache: a dark blob, and some fine grey strokes, for exemple. The difficulty is to be right...

the goal was to avoid an airbrushed look (i HATE airbrush !), and to be somewhat alive. look at some Vermeer painting, it's full of advices, look at the light around you, go a lot at goodbrush.com, to the museum, and look again, be happy and take care.

oh, i forgot:
i said i hate airbrushing, but i must confess i only used the airbrush tool on this picture... (a world of contradictions, i know), but with the "hard edge" brushes.
it's why the picture has this pastel look, i guess. with the paintbrush tool, the render is more like an oil painting, or a gouache.

it's been a long time since i last saw this piece. was it only 3 years ago, really?... anyway, you can do a lot better than that (and you SSOOOOOO know it!! : ).
and man, your English is so good i feel like crawling under a rock and stay there until Hell (or something very much like it) freezes over.
