"ASIAN ELEGANCE (revisited)"
(You can veiw the original painting/post here.

Ok, it's late so I'll make this short.
I made a few changes to the painting after taking some advice from Craig Mullins and others from various boards I posted this image at.
1. I repainted the tiles and made them non-reflective. (I may change that later.)
2. I painted some colder hues into her skin so she would blend in easier with the background. Same with the fan.
3. I made some perspective and color changes to the back wall.
4. I completely repainted the vase and put some orchids in place of the calla lily. (calla lilies are native to mexico not asia. who knew? =/ )
5. Slight other changes have been made to the rest of the painting trying to make the colors coincide better with each other.

"Asian Elegance (revisited)"~

Vase/Flower Detail.

Let me know what you think.

Malachi

(P.s. Sorry Fallen. I tried the mat floor thang, but it just wasn't working out. =/ )

it's not bad.

nice work, though it kinda looks like she is hovering. I am missing some shadow, or something on the left side of the body. I know, that the lightsource comes from there, but I am a bit disturbed by it.

Is it intention, thatthe doesn't look like an Asian? The surroundings look asian,..

All in all a nice pic.

Good work, although maybe too clean for my taste. It looks very much like vector art.

anyway, my only crit is that her side, next to her left breast, looks like it is pasted on the floor, or flat against it.. Dunno, but while there is depth elsewhere, for me it doesn't elevate/make round that part.

Hey Malachi.

A few things I've noticed were that the (cylinder) perspective on the back vase is off, making your nice rendering efforts take a second place to the wrong base geometry.

The shadowing on the tiles under the body perhaps needs a little revisiting, where shadows are darker in areas where the body is close to the ground, where less bounce light reaches there; I think you need to add a bit of that all around the girl to give it that local point lightbulb in the small wash(?)-room. You could also add a bit of shadow to sepperate fan from the body, they now look like they lie on single 2D plane. Also on a contrary effect, body portions that are close to the floor and well lit will reflect and bounce some light around tightly/locally onto the floor. Part of the shadow deal, the vase doesn't seem to be sitting on the ground very well, as the values on the vase are clearly different than the local floor around... the vase also catches the reflection of something light on the left side, eminated from nowhere.

Skin is also slightly reflective, catching the values and hues of the environment, especially where the surface of the skin if perpendicular to our view (Fresnel effect).

Oh, the fact that the girl doesn't look Asian kind of ruins it imho; Authenticity rules - no one likes wanna be's (she just looks like a white girl wanting to be Asian). She's very very well rendered though! Good job!

I just meant to be helpful with those comments.

cheers,
frost.

Thanks for the c&c all.

Frost~ Hey, thanks for the crits and comments man. I agree with almost everything you said. Everything except the asian part. =/ She's not asian, or supposed to be asian. I simply meant the theme/surroundings were asian. Sorry for not being more clear about it. You're totally right about the shadows though. And I think the vase would look more grounded if I added the reflections again. (Think I will.)

Take it easy,
Malachi

"Asian Elegance (revisited for the LAST damn time)"

Ok,
I added some new reflections. I think there not only better, but more accurate than in the original painting. Reflections were also added to the vase this time. I really tried to pull the color and lighting in the whole piece together one final time. I know it's not exact, but it's the best I can do trying to simply imagine this girl in this environment with no reference of her surroundings to work from.

Comments are of course, welcome. Critique if you like, but I don't think I'll be touching this painting anymore.
