That's not very manga-ish to me
most manga styles doesn't show lips, and their eyes are defined in different ways
The neck needs some fix up as well.
Also, most manga arts look better without colouring unless you can do it like Clamp or something |

Twacle, I can see what you are after here. Good effort so far. I can tell you are starting out, and that you're after the kind of stylized beauty favored by japanese cartoonists.
I would suggest some basic tips for how to get started. That worked for me anyway.
Don't be discouraged, it's better to keep working and do new work every day. Don't labor over one drawing, start the next on right away.
Start with copying directly. It's ok to copy - you need to get the basics of the style down. Find some good examples of simple manga and copy them.
Try to make your lines smooth and unbroken. Don't hatch make jagged strokes. Anime is very slick and flowing.
Use simple, flat colors to get started. Anime shading is done with hard edged flat shading, not tonal blends as in american art.
Good luck!

I don't know marc, i would strongly urge any 'would-be-manga' artist NOT TO COPY, but more over STUDY what makes anime and manga, ...anime and manga. I mean REALLY study the style, because most anime artist i've seen out side of japan have been copying for so long that all their styles look like ...well Neon Genesis Evangelion. (which is great if you want to be an animator)
Also, the most important, on top of studying Anime, please, please, look at the world around you! DRAW FROM REAL LIFE, don't try to adapt the anime style directly. And also PLEASE don't draw Japanese people if you know NOTHING ABOUT JAPANESE CULTURE. I don't; i've lived in America all my life, i know white, suburban, American culture. Besides 90% of the characters you've seen in anime are...well, japanese/asian people. European, Africans, East Indians, look different...we all know that! (Of course, Fantasy and Sci-fiction can be whatever you wish...)
AND IF YOUR ASIAN, GO FOR IT! DRAW WHAT YOU LIKE!
Thats my advice ![](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) |

I know nothing about alien culture, yet I draw aliens. I know nothing about the african way of life, tribes etc... yet I draw african tribes. I know nothing about chicks with bunny ears, yet I draw them (read : try to ) Does that mean I'm wasting my time drawing what I want ? Who the hell are you to tell a person what not to draw ![](images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) |

I'v been drawing anime style characters for four years but I wish I started out studying anatomy cause you may not know this but anime actually has alot to do with anatomy. I mean sure the face is really off reality with those huge eyes (well not all anime style has huge eyes....it's people's misconception that all anime people has huge-glowing eyes) and I like anime but I prefer styles that are closer to reality.....cause besides the head the rest of the body is very much realistic although some anime style has characters with really really long legs and everything like CLAMP
for inspiration I suggest you see Evangelion and Cowboy bebop. They are my favorites. |

Here is an example of an Anime-ish charcater done with a tonal blend instead of the more traditional cel-style shading.
For the beginner attempting to emulate an Anime style, I would suggest less emphisis on detail, and more focus on shape and form.
[edit] image contains very, very mild adult content.
