Do you use the ball point pens you use in the office/buy at RiteAid. Because I just get dark or nothing...

Nup - Bic pens(I'm in New Zealand so whether those are everywhere I'm not sure....you *can't* literally get cheaper pens).
Experience helps with pressure application and more so just experience in drawing, I suppose. Not that I claim to be *experienced*.

EDIT - remeber these pics are A4(letter). they're shrunken, and when saved they get smoothed over somewhat.

I did these in a high school sketchbook some 6 or 7 years ago. I call the Gargoyle guy Willie because of his braids like the singer.The Alien one was the second in the series of 3 over 3 years. The first one, he stood by himself, the second year is the one shown, and the third year was a Blair Witch take-off where you just see the top of his head.
