A slightly more light-hearted take on the bad rat theme--this is the thief who steals the stars from the sky so that they can twinkle instead in the eyes of pretty girls.
It is almost without colour this time...I used my laptop to do this one, and the screen does no justice to colour. |

Hey Socar. Nice stuff. It's one of my new favs.
One question.......How do you paint on a laptop? Do you plug your Wacom in via usb port or something? And, how much ram does your laptop have to be able to run PhotoShop and a Wacom tablet at the same time? That must be a pretty sweet laptop to be able to do that. My chick has a laptop and it can't multi-task worth a shiznizle.
Anyway........I really like the texturing on the bark of the tree. Very nice.
Take it easy,

Darklighter - Yeah, you're probably right about that...I didn't even notice what a weird foot-position I had chosen.
Clueless Morgan - Thanks for the compliment. Yes, this is just in Photoshop. I have some tutorials about how it's done at http://www.gorblimey.com/tutorials/ .
Bob the Newt - Why does someone ALWAYS have to ask that question? Why rats? Well, painting rats makes me happy. I spend most of my time drawing things that aren't rats for work...so in my free time, I just draw what I want.
Malachi Maloney - Yes, I just put the Wacom in the laptop's USB port. I've got 128 RAM on my laptop, I think...can't remember exactly how much I bought. It's pretty snappy, though.
Icannon & Frosted Flame - Thanks much! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

That's cool. I like that you keep drawing rats, at least we know what to expect from you ![](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) |

Anyway...this rat is actually very different from most of the rats I draw.... I used several reference photos instead of a live model...because no-one I know has a Gambian giant pouched rat for me to draw. The model is about 17 inches long (not including tail), and six inches high at the shoulder. Isn't she sweet? I want to get one of these little guys one day. |

Eeee, her little hands are cute... and the thread seems so delicate. I'd be afraid to touch it.
My vis. language teacher would probably start going on about hotspots and contrast and stuff if he were looking at this. Get him out of my head... arghh..
Love them ratties. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Socar, I used to think you were wierd always drawing rats, but lately your rats are beginning to develop an unusual natural allure to them, and I love the simple yet soft stories behind them. This and your lady portrait are my favorites so far.
And strapping a Wacom to a laptop aint all that difficult, my work laptop only has 98 megs and a 330 celeron processor, and it works fine. |

Hey, love this one. Don't know why I didn't click on this thread earlier
I especially like the story behind the rat. How do you manage to dream up such weird stories ?
The trunk he's standing on reminds me of Tim Burton's Nightmare before Christmas in a way.
Have to agree that the foot position is really weird. But whatever. Still far better than what I could do.
Did you do this one on the road ? I mean with your laptop. |

I like, if I were to make a comment, I would like to see the sky colored more blue-ish, but no complaints.
PS: My two little girls (3 and 5) have rats and love them. One of them likes to draw her rat (Mitzi).
Keep up the good work... |
