Hi!

Glad to have the forums back, it's been way too long since I last posted anything here..

So to break that unfortunate habit (of posting too seldom), here's my latest cover illustration for Conan magazine, your crits and comments are welcome.

It must be said however that it has been printed already so it's not much I I can do now, but it's still nice to get some feedback for the future..

The sad thing is that the printed version was waay too dark and contrasty, so I felt it lost a lot from what I had painted originally.. Aw well.. Just the way it goes sometimes I guess.

This is great! The atmosphere is well executed, and the scene is, well very nicely done.

My only crit is the proportions on the main figure seem squarish and a little dispraportionate, but this may be a style issue and prefered by the market for the mag, and if this is the case then disregard that crit.

Nice work.

Nice, I like the chain =)

His mouth is open pretty darn wide though... but I think it's ok since it appears to be a somewhat exaggerated piece anyway.

Thanks for the feedback!
Much appreciated indeed...!

Yep, it's definetly meant to be an exaggerated painting stylewise. These kinds of illustrations are a lot of fun to do, but afterwards I can often notice small things that look odd and could have been more 'correct'. But as long as the image comes together as a whole it doesn't matter that much to me that there are some imperfections here and there. Too perfect can also sometimes make it less interesting and bland, I think. But it depends ofcourse on what kind of painting you're doing and what style is best suited for the job. I might post some other stuff here soon, which is quite different stylewise..

Developing a style is pretty hard and takes time, and that's why it's so great to get feedback like this. I'd really like to know if people think the style works or not.. :)

Thanks for taking the time. Now sleepy...

Cool. It reminds of those covers for the old fantasy movies with the near naked women and modelesc barbarians only with bromish guys instead of some perfect model. Was that oil or digital. If it was digital was there alot of blending in photoshop? How did you do it?

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Quazar - Thanks, glad you like it

K-RuzH - Thank you, atmosphere and colors are so important, I spent a lot of time trying to get it right on this one.

Docfunkalot - Thanks, that is exactly the look and feeling I went for..! Love those old posters :) It is purely digital, primarily in photoshop with some texture work in painter (good for brushstrokes etc) though I am very glad you were unsure if it maybe was oil..! I don't want these paintings to look obviously digital. As far as technique, I mostly just use the plain brush tool in photoshop, some of the arty brushes in painter and sometimes overlay some subtle filter textures here and there.

MrLuizDiaz - Thanks! Been checking out your stuff on this and other forums.. You're doing some quite excellent stuff yourself :)

Very nice Christer. Good to see you posting again!
It looks abit dark here on my monitor which I guess leaves little room for the priters not to schrew up. I usually paint a little brighter than i would prefer if I know the output will be on print. Most often the contrast will be up and the whole image darkened a little... Just my experience.
That said it does look awesome! His left leg looks a tad to small I think... just had to crit 'something'
Been taking Veb's job, eh? Or are you guys swapping?

Nice work and welcome back Christer!
Let me start by saying that I love this type of fantasy art. It has a nice painterly style for a digital image.
I realy like the detail in the character and the background looks great!
