i haven't posted anything for quite some time, and it might have something to do with me being extremely lazy.
hmm. yep. could be.
anyway, here's my latest pic, testing some new work methods in Painter.
any kind of feedback would be great.
(edit-arrgh! trying again)

wow, the colors are awesome, and the technique you used is especially great in the cap, the aspect of cloth is extremely well rendered
as a crit the background and the crop of the pic might need touch ups
but its really great, full of life and warmness |

i think the head looks great, and agree that the colours are really well-done. the neck could use some work though, it looks less well-constructed than the head. the adam's apple seems to jut out in a way that doesn't jive with the rest of the picture, and the angle of the neck seems abitrary.. instead of such an angular adam's apple, i'd expect to see some tendons sticking out, as he twists his head for the "camera"... |

This is interesting. I quite like the scratchy feel of the pic when you look close. Shows a neat style.

Hey Bilbo, welcome back! We're getting most of the old crew around again, pretty sweet. Your colors are good in this one, albeit perhaps a touch on the cartoony side here and there. But hey, it's a charicature! :] You might want to be careful to seperate the plains on the details too-like the top of his nostril. That'll help define it more accurately while still keeping the nice brushwork style. Painter has some great tool for painting...paintings. :] Welcome back, keep it up! |

Thanks guys! i appreciate your comments.
i definitely agree with the crits about the composition and cropping of the image- i'm still not thinking of my works as complete pieces but rather as a way of practicing and improving my lighting and coloring skills, so all the other aspects are being neglected at the moment.
Anthony J - i think i used painter's default pastel crayon, with a reduced level of texture (grain) in it, and smaller brush size- that's what creates these scratchy brushstrokes all over the place, which i like at this point.
Anthony - thanks.. about the palette- i am really new with color, so there's a lot of guesswork going on here.. i'm fairly content with the colors on this one- it's not realistic but i think it has a certain vibrance to it, and that's the direction i want to try and develop. |
