Well, if you are a great bass player, people WILL notice you. If you can write basslines that kick-ass, people WILL pay attention to what you are playing. |

Listen to the Red Hot Chilly Peppers, Suicidal Tendencies, Primus, Faith no More, Candiria, even Tool... and you will realize that none of those bands would be anywhere as good without the great bass players they have. Also those lines are very difficult to play even if you are a great guitar player. It's easy to do a decent job with the bass without much effort (most rock bands today)but to actually be good takes a lot of work and bloody fingers. I enjoy a good rhythm section more than any guitar solo, that's what makes a good band for me. Most of jazz based music has a big emphasis on that. Anyhow, just one man's opinion... |

Les Claypool.
T.M. Stevens.
Zach Work.
These are your bass gods. Worship them. Listen to them. Play their songs.
And get a goddamned stand-up bass, will you? I'm tired of weak, shitty bass lines.
*nod*
Oh. And the bass rocks. It's my life's dream to gank one of Les' custom made six-stringers.

Hehe, well I do think the bass is a nice instrument. Its like comfy. bumbumbdidumbumd. I'd like to have a bass of my own, i've only played on my friends/schools. But my primary thing now is to get a new amplifier.. but a ESP e-guitar sure would be nice (same model James Hetfield in Metallica uses) |

Geddy Lee?
Bass is important. Fun to play alone, too. |

--Warning Mind Less Banter ------
Taking all the lime from me, dammit wish they would turn there silly amps down..
There has to be a electric guitarist around here.. do u respect your BASS player ?
If not, you damn well should .. If it wasn't for us and the drums u would have no band .
Is there another bassist out there ?

Hahah the bass sucks
heh no seriously, the bass IS an important part of the band..but this really depends on what sort of music you are playing. I mean in some songs you can NOT hear the bass-player what so ever. That is what I think is lacking in many bands these days. There should be a nice harmony between the guitar & the bass. But sadly the e-guitar usually takes over.
Funny thing though, a guitar player can usually play the bass with ease, while a bassplayer usually have a really hard time playing the guitar
But playing the bass..is boring. Or atleast when you play alone..to have fun with a bass you have to have the drums & a guitar with you..in my opinion that is. |

sure is fun to play alone right now i'm listing to Jaco pastorius, amazing player...
Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke and Mark King
damn best players I've heard.. as for rock and bass guitar,
Its basicly pointless in these nu-metal bands. e.g Linkin Park..
After listing to the Papa Roach album all the bass guitar good is for is playing the reggae on the hidden track "Tight Rope" |

i agree that a band is not only about the guitarist. I play bass and i think that it can eaisly hold its own against guitar. but guitar does add a feel to music that the bass just cant do. |

It the frets are quite far apart and if u don't know anything about music its gonna take u awhile for example
Teacher
"I want u play swing beat today with twelve-bar blues starting on G7, so its gonna go G7,C7,G7,Am7,D7,G7 Please add dead notes and harmonics "
U got know that the bass guitar goes up in semi-tones...
and be E and F there are no E# and Fb, same with B and C..
As for the walks in Jazz Bloody impossible change chords so much other than that its pretty okeh instrument ..
Hardest part in playing funky, when u first get the bass your gonna find your trying to make a DJ sratching noise sound on the strings |

I thought bass was easy, but man it's hard to hold (!) maybe I have small fingers. Damn brother can span five frets, bugger him, on a normal electric. I'd love to learn it but my hands would probably not let me
And I love Flea (RHCP), he rocks. Cool bassline: 'National Anthem' by Radiohead, infintely repetitive and full of jazz |

someone was mentioning bands with great bass players, well you should all check out Incubus. Their bassist, Dirk has an awsome funk sound on their earlier materail which is part of the reason Incubus are unique.
check em.
