The sijun lesson idea:
I'm allways having big problems with the light and colour values in my pics and I'm sure that I'm not the only one. There are probably others who want to improve their figure skills or something else.
If you post a picture and you now that there are problems with the light for example, the written solutions only partly help. If the solution of this problem only is discribed it surely will not be easy to fix. An overpaint would surely help much more but only a few of us do have the time to help somebody like this (or by this?).
So I thought about good way to help a lot of people with similar problems with just one post, the sijun lesson post:
There could be a lineart scene (created by someone, lets call him teacher) with a fixed object which is more or less easy to render, a defined lightsource (for exaple outside, evening lightning) and given materials or textures ( shiny metal or something). After this scene was posted everybody who is interested could try to draw this scene as good as he (or she sorry) can. All these people now post their images. An important thing: The teacher (must be someone who nearly knows erverything about the problems which should be solved in this lesson) is watching and does his own drawing of the scene. All these people now have a lot of pics of the same scene so they notice what they did wrong and they also see how other artists tried to render the scene. There might be a dicussion afterwards which is something like a rebrifing.
After this the scene could be made more complex (another lightsource or another object...) and everybody could start again. At the end a lot of people might understand more of in this case colour and lightning.
This lesson idea could also be an anatomie lesson or whatever.
I hope that all of you understand what im trying to say with my bad English and please don't blame me if you think that the idea sucks.
But tell me what you think of my idea, and hey where are the teachers?
Now something completly different, the image to justify the post in this section:
It's done for now cause the project is currently stopped.null

I would be happy to help.
For starters, it seems to me that the sample image is lit from the wrong side of the light beam shape.

Hey nice idea. I think something similar to your idea was done in the past. It was called paint along with Fred. Fred Flickstone took a whole class sort of thing. Do a search for 'Paint along with Fred'... it will be in the old forum, before the split. |

Thats a really good Idea. You learn a lot and itsvery interesting to see how other people do the coloring on exactly the same drawing!

But that's so old that all the picture-URLs has been expired. v_v |

This sounds like a very worthwhile project. I would be glad to help. Although I am not an expert on lighting and have fallen short a few times myself..but feedback helps a lot...an artist is lost without it. I love the forums and comment sections in galleries that help you to see your work with other eyes.

woooo, I didn't expect that many replies....
but I'm very happy that so many of you are interested in doing this project.
Red Leader: Looks like you're thinking about a job as a teacher don't you ? I just took a look at some pics of you and it looks like you would be a good one. If you are really interested please tell us. I would be really really happy to have someone like you as a teacher.
Collosimo: Now I'm sad that these lessons by Fred took place before I spotted this place. And I'm even more sad because the search function isn't running on my computer for some reason. But as maxon said the pictures are probably missing, so it wouldn't help that much anyway.
Kallen: So you are the second teacher for our lessons, am I right?
What do all of you think the first scene should look like, any suggestions?
I thought about a really simple pic at first to test this concept. (Maybe a ball placed in front of a wall to get some light reflected from that wall on the ball). Afterwards we could do a more complex one.
I'll think about the scene this evening and post again tomorrow.
All of you please post your scene ideas so we are able to start the first lesson soon. I'm looking forward to it!
Thank you all. |

Ill take part, but I think we shouldnt do that hush-hush too soon. That could ruin things, as seen in recent times what things can happen.
I think that as much thought as possible should be put in that idea, because its really good and it should be established after clearing things up about the forum-future.

sounds like a cool project. i would like to help in any way possible, although i'm no master artist. i think things like this make this forum so valuable.
i did a bunch of studies similar to what i think you're talking about. i'll just list them so maybe if you like any of them, you cna use them.
1. white cube and black cube on infinite plane
2. cylinder and cone
3. cone and sphere
4. white cube, cone, sphere, cylinder on shiny black plane
5. chrome |

Oh I'm a bit late with this post I'm sorry and I'm also sorry for bringing this post back to page one but there might be some people still interested in this experiment.
gLitterbug: I thought about the point you mentioned but I think if we don't start it now, this idea won't be started at all.
And what is that abot the forum-future? Did I miss something while being absent?
So I'll think about a content till Thursday evening (central european time ) to post a simple outline-scene in a new topic with a discription of light and structur then. Everybody (let's hope there are a lot of people) interested is invited to take part and post his version of the image. It would be great if there is some kind of teacher taking part but if there is none, there will surely a helpfull discussion evolve.
I don't want to force somebody to be teacher by typing his name in a new topic like xxx wouldn't you like to do that.
Everybody post your thoughts about this and if you have another interesting scene idea please post it.
S4Sb: Thank you for the link. I lost the bookmark by a computer crash. It's a really valuable page!
seburo_007; I'll probably take one of these things. I don't think it's good to make these objecs black and white because colour will be more "teaching"?!
is chrome to diffcult for the beginning? |
