uhm...hi
i got a book about Rembrandt some time ago and was totally blown away from his selfportraits...i decided to copy one of his works, because i think it's a very good way to learn from him. BUT...I painted my face instead of his.
The size is about 60*40 cm
and the whole thing is painted in acrylics
ps: exuse my crappy english
bye

that's very good. you should try painting it with oils next time. the clothes look fantastic, but the face has sort of a blank stare. i love copying rembrandt paintings aswell, i might start a new thread with my copies! |

hey thats great alexg!
rich colors. I don't know the original painting but looks like you did a good job captuering the feel of it. The eyes seem a bit big to me. |

Hey, nice work alex. I like this, for the most part you've rendered this portrait very well. However, two areas stand out and grab my attention as being 'not quite right.'
1. His right elbow seems to be bending unnaturally closer to the viewer, I think using a cooler highlight will help show that the elbow is out of the shadow and reflecting light, but it will also keep from pulling the elbow closer to the viewer as the warm highlight tends to do.
2. This is a rather small point and may be a little nit picky but his left foot doesn't seem to be resting on the ground, but rather an inch or two above the floor, but if that were the case there would need to be a shadow under the foot. Kind of nitpicky and it looks as if you may have just hurried over that area, but it still caught my eye.
Also, the composition is a little boring, I realize that it is a portrait, but everything is a little too centered, at least for me anyway.
Overall I would say that this is a very successful study, good work. Parts I especially like are his hat, his 'belly,' and the metal piece on the left side about waist height. What exactly is that by the way?
Hope my critique was helpful. I would like to see more of your work, if you haven't tried oils I suggest that you do, I think they would compliment your work well.
[edit: just made my first support ribbon , if anyone wants to use it, feel free to link to it off of my server, or stick it on your own if you like, I don't care.. hehe]

Hi Alex. Great job! The costume is just beautiful. Amazing details and textures. ...shiny!
I agree with both of Striker's points. The elbow and foot are aren't quite sitting in space properly. As far as the composition goes, that's Rembrant's problem! Not that you can't improve on the masters...
One other thing that stands out is that the eye on the right looks as though someone is shining a very dim pink light on it. I assume it's supposed to be catching some of the light coming from the left, but the color is so different that it looks a bit odd.
Great job, though. That's quite an undertaking.

jr: thanks, hmm i never tried painting with oils, but i think it's time for me to test them out
Kazz: thank you, i think the size of the eyes are ok
Striker: first point is rembrandt's fault
ouch...the foot, i should have spent more time on this area
Breakerboy2: thanks, you're right about the eye...i'll do it better next time |

Hi, alex, I like this picture. It's kinda funny to see a self-portrait in this style
I don't really like the shadows on his face. Their redness makes him look like a burn victim or something I think the area above his left eye should be a bit darker than it is. And maybe the the skin just below the hat-thingy should be darker? I don't know.
These don't really affect the picture all that much. Good job.
edit: haha, I think I'm gonna start using that ribbon, striker
