Well, it's supposed to be at least . Anyway, I don't do a lot of digital painting or painting at all for that matter and I could really use some advise. So please, please critique.

This piece is a nice start, but in the future, please post incomplete work in the "work in progress" forum.

Well if it's finished you didn't try very hard to complete it.

The anatomy is off on the arm and the face is
really screwy......just my opinion...

Try making it less blurred and put some outline on it.....

Don't take Pop too seriously, I think everyone here is a bit cranky today, myself included.

This may be just picking at straws, but look at your sky. It's obviously not complete. YOU may be done with it, but IT's not done, so this post should be in "work in progress"

I'm sorry to make an example of you, but it looks like this place needs a bit of straightening up, and we all have to do our part.

Anyone with incomplete posts like this one should be posting in the other category.

Post there, and I'll bet you'll get more favorable responses.

Well, I'm not too hurt or anything. I appreciate any comments I can get. He is right though; I really didn't try too hard. It's for a contest at the Topcow boards, it started as a quick pencil sketch and since I hadn't done any painting in a while I said what the hell. I don't really mind harsh comments too much.

But on the other hand, I see people posting stuff in the Finished Work area that’s even more visibly incomplete then mine.

I agree that there are pieces on this board that are not as complete as yours, but yours was closest to the top...

I will post similar statements whenever I see work done to this level of completion. There really seems to be no self policeing on this board, and newer members have no sense of what is appropriate for the finished gallery. That's not really your fault, no one has really posted any rules as such.

I'm not saying that it's up to me, I'm saying that there have to be some generally accepted guidelines. If senior board members (obviously including more senior than relatively freshy-me) would help out people in figuring out where stuff goes more often, I think we'll see more order and progress on Sijun.

I noticed that you are more senior than me, so you should probably know better

Finished gallery should definitely be for completed, "can't see anything more to do here", work.

Jeezus guys, who pissed in your Wheaties? Not every picture has to be a freaking Picasso, you know. And I don't see you complaining much when Spooge or Isric post their rough "unfinished, won't be finished" paintings here. Nice double-standard.

My critique would be that the crossguards on his swords and the way his scabbard his attached to his belt are Western. Japanese swords have very small guards, and the scabbards are usually thrust through the belt, rather than hanging from a cord. Except for the tachi, which is a sword carried by high-ranking nobles, that hangs by a pair of cords, but is carried almost parallel to the ground instead of at a 45 degree angle, Western-style.

This thread is starting to be unfair to poor Imhotep... I am going to start a new thread in Random Musings...

Sorry Imho.

Hell, I don't mind. I was going to bring up how other much more talented members here post stuff that’s unfinished as I have and rarely get complaints but I didn't really want to make a big deal of it... Too late .

Anyway thanks very much LordArioch for the critique, I guess I never really thought about it, more research on samurai is required.

blade of the immortal rulez! Top points just for knowing that enough to draw manji =)

Well the most obvious crit would be his right arm just looks strange.. At first I thought it was benidng in the wrong direction but know i made it out. If you show his body shape through the garment a little better, (but keep it subtle still) it would be clearer.

Also the pic is flat, try and think about lighting. Where is the sun? cast a shadow from the figure. Some light tints/reflections on the swords would be nice too.. Anyway just keep at it.

LordArioch, I don't know why you ask who pissed in my Wheeties, I was being polite.

Since Imho doesn't mind, I will add this: If Isric, or Spooge, or anyone else for that matter posted incomplete work in the finished gallery at this point, I would ask them to kindly post in the other category. EVERYONE needs to play by the same rules, and the problem with Sijun is that there no longer are rules.

Anyone interested in further debate on the subject can go to Random musings and check out the Forum Rulebook thread, we now return you to your regularly scheduled critiquing.

I was mostly referring to Poprocksz's rude comment. But I'm a bit tired of people being so anal about what is posted where. And I don't recall anyone appointing you hall monitor, Red Leader. Your idea of what is "incomplete" is not the same as what my idea of it is. And I think there are much bigger problems on the board other than what is posted where.
