This is a character pinup we made for a magazine. Pencils by Ben Lai, inks by Ray Lai, and colors by me. I just felt like posting something instead of adding to the recent complaint threads.

Reminds me of early witchblade and fathom work at Top Cow Comics before the artists changed and quality of the comic suffered.

I really like that. The pulsing viens sort of remind me of the mecha from Zone of the ENders. I've always had trouble inking finely. Your lines look great, nice and clean. How it should be I guess.

His hair cut looks a little bit old skool though :P

Hi Chapel,

I don't have anything constructive to say about the colours. They are very well done.

It occurs to me though. With a fancy suit of armour like that, you'd think there'd be some place to attach a helmet or something. As it is, it doesn't look like it would take one. Damn, that sounds picky, but it's not meant to be.

Radiater.

Hi man,
Perfect i can't say something about your art!
I would like to know how you proceed? your drawn the black line on a tablet and you fill the colour after? is it digital? is it on paper, scan and light effect in photoshop?

Thanks for checking it out folks!

Wireframe: I don't see any T&A here.

Superbug: Not everyone has a stylin haircut. hehe

Akolyte: Blue is my favorite. I thought they looked neat.

EviLToYLeT: That is the idea! (I just realized what your name is by the way.. funny)

Wyatt Turner: Thanks. I spend too much time on those details.

Radiater: There is a reason no helmet is involved, but that is part of our story.

krobar: The only digital work was the coloring. It was penciled and inked by Ben and Ray Lai.

Wow you continue to amaze me. my only complaint is it seems like there are those litle circuit things on his head, but the glow distorts them too much to see them there. Might wanna tone that down, i dunno. Please work faster so i can buy this book heh.

Thanks folks!

Well, I'm getting paid for this now, so I guess you could say I'm getting into it.

As for the little electrobes on the head.. not everything is clear all the time.. as long as you think something is there then it works.

As Flexible Elf said, very good work.
I like the sense of 3d you got without going to extreme lights and shadows, but a soft lighting and nice colors =)

Brian,

I'm with you... we really need to stick to good old crits and praise here. (And I thought I was safe at CCU Yikes!!)

Anyway,

  • I really like the luminous quality of your work. Those lights and type really draw my eye (Watch out, they seem to be out of gammut. Is this going to be printed? ) I like the overall pallette a lot.

  • The main problem I really see is that you seem to be going with a standard uniform 3 color modelling scheme. This doesn't work in the shadow areas on the guy's armour, it's just not dark enough. A good point of reference is the 3 light-beige metal vents on both his shins. The left leg is clearly too bright here. For that cast body shadow, I recommend a cyan loaded gradient set to multiply used in a selection.

  • His codpiece is rendered as though it comes to a crease.

  • I also noticed that the value and hue of the floor shadow is congruent with his right ankle, no thanks to the artwork. I'd lighten the shadow up with a grad of the blue light color from the back to the front.

  • The vents on the guy's right arm seem not to follow the overall lighting scheme.

Don't get me wrong, overall, I like what I see a lot.

I know you hate overpaints, so I won't give you one unless you want one, most of what I'm saying should be pretty clear anyway.

Hey Dave thanks for the crit!

Well I agree with all of your comments. I have a lot to learn still. Unfortunately, I'm learning all of these things as I go. The images I post here are pretty much done though, so I just have to consider everything for what I do next.
