Well, this was the first cover I colored for my book Radix. Still not sure if this WILL be the cover, because we already used it on promo posters. Sorry if this is a big download. Pencils and inks by Ben and Ray Lai.

Chapel, that's beautiful, man! There's so much going on in that image that I just have to stare and drool.. It's just plain awesome...

Congrats on the job, man.. It looks like you deserve it.

[Edit] Oh yeah, thanks for the new background.

Damn... That is really tight. I really like the usage of colors. It gives the drawing a real good balance. Love the details. Congrats to you for getting into the color department of the comic industry. I hope all you works are like this.. I really like seeing this one. Very awesome. You gotta teach me how to use the colors that well one day.

When you have bright lighting, as in fire and explosions in the background, isn't that supposed to cast strong shadows (form shadows especially)?

Maybe something you may want to think about... I like this piece a lot, but I think it lacks some potential for 'drama' and artistic effect, and expression. I think that if you accentuated just such a contrasty lighting situation, then it would greatly benefit the illustration.

Hmmmph... its a montage though.. that makes it difficult, and the comic stlye as well, so...

I suppose it is a comic, and comics tend to use a lot of diffuse lighting. I would love to see the lighting exploited for more of an expressive and dramatic point of view. An artful purpose for expression and storytelling perhaps.

Chapel....good work on getting into the biz.. hard to break into a dying industry
Anyways your coloring is looking good. I think some areas look a little to airbrushed for my tastes. One thing I might suggest ...and im sure you do this ,is look at Liqueds stuff....the texturing he does with the lasso tool using selections..you can set up actions which make certain selections and use the dodge and burn tool to make shaded textures very quickly..you will see this a lot in his work on soul saga.

The penciler is awsome....have they done any other pro work im not familier with the lai brothers??? There stuff is toooo good.

[edit] ohhh are those the guys who do that weapon zero type book for that new comic book company..whats it called...

very nice Chapel. Changing name again, eh? Nice colors and a nice drawing also. But why is the car brighter than the explosion? I think you could have made a more interesting lightsetting if you had used the explosion more as a lightsource... Just a thought.

Thanks for all the great responses folks! I've been around for awhile.. posting here and there just not as often as I use to.

I'll try to address a few of things brought up. Everything is in the middle of an explosion = lightsourcing everywhere (also known as a pain in the ass). My job was to convey that, but keep the picture understandable. Alot of things are going on and if I made everything bright and poping out then lots of the cool detail would get looked over. I wanted it to be very readable. So, its not perfect, but its my first cover.. live and learn.

The shadows.. I made a few hard ones on the figures themselves. I don't really think there would be many big hard edge shadows do to the flames being everywhere. Think of watching a football game at night and look at the player's shadows on the field.

As far as me coloring like Liquid. Its not going to happen. Liquid colors how he enterprets things. I color things like I see them. My world isn't as shiney. Dodge and burn... I really hope your joking.

The Lai bros were the original artist on the comic "Sigil" by CrossGen. They did issues 1-5.

I think that is about it... oh and check out our site for more stuff. http://www.horizoncomics.com

Ok a few questons:
1. HOw long did this take?
2. Are you the whole books colorist, or just the cover colorist?
3. Whens the book coming out so i can purchase it?
4. Is Dodge and Burn really such a newbie thing to use?

Thats all. heh.

1. More than 8 hours less than a year... roughly. Maybe a total of 15-16 hours. I did this at 400 dpi before I had a high end PC, so saving was a pain.

2. I'm coloring the whole book an anything that has to do with it. Variant covers included.

3. The book will be out in December. I believe we will release them on the second Wednesday of every other month.

4. I don't use dodge and burn period. Not much control in those tools and its really just a cheesy what to get something bright or dark.. not highlight or shade.

More info on the book at http://www.horizoncomics.com

you that is just amazing... blew me away when i first saw it.

the only thing i can crit (and this is a strech) is that i think you should work on making the charactors look like their tuching the ground a little more... maybe some tred marks by the wheels, or something like that. this is minor tho, and its only a suggestion.

keep up the awesome work

A controled dodge can be very effective. And useful. Burn is evil.

Very cool, Brian.

I don't know about the blue of the bike, nor it's tires. They are both very soft and airbrushed looking. I just feel like the metal should be a harder cut. Specifically, the round area near the rear tire.

The car's windows don't really look like glass. Again a diagonal cut, of light reflecting off it might help.

I agree, while I would like to see the explosion be very bright and powerful looking. It would overpower the foreground if it was. And you made the right choice.

The female character looks fantastic. Well, all the characters do.

Some stars in the sky?

A big fat logo goes across most of the space in the upper right and.. don't you think there is enough crap going on as it is?

As far as hard cuts.. ehh.. not really my style, but thanks for the comments.
