...and then meet in real life.

A friend I've known online for three years or so came to visit me two weeks ago, and she's been living with me in my flat for those two weeks now. Only her vacation is up now.

I've had some disappointments with people I've known online and then meet in real life before... most of them (MOST, mind you, not ALL) didn't measure up to the image I had of them. But this person... she's a complete doll. Unbelievably nice and wonderful. The kind of person I'd really love to have as my best friend... hang out with... do stuff with... just be around.

And now she's back in America and I'm in Sweden. I'm feeling more than a bit sad =( So unfair that someone I would count as one of my best friends lives so far away I might never get to meet her again.

Anyway... I'm back at the forum. Just thought I'd say that.

Ta for now...

*sniffles and goes to stare listlessly at the telly*

Awww...you poor thing! (I know just how you feel, at the moment!) I'm glad you had a nice time, though.

I've only ever met a couple of online people, myself--a couple of fellow Vancouver artists, a gentleman I went on a couple of dates with in Texas (no, no, not an online relationship--'friend' dates, not romantic dates. Walking his dog, mostly.) Oh, yeah. And you. (And half the population of your town, eh? Slight exaggeration....)

Hm...well. I don't know. I've found that most people I met from online were fairly similar to the way I'd imagined them, apart from in appearance. I've never been disappointed--maybe I didn't set my expectations very high. Or maybe I was just lucky with the people I met...who knows?

Anyway, I'm sorry you're sad now--but at least you can get some drawings done, eh? Maybe not much of a consolation. But I hope you feel better - and stop watching the telly! It rots your brain! (just kidding!)

Yeah.. the internet is so odd like that. I mean.. ICQ or whatever was always enough until you meet someone, where it then turns into either too much or not enough. :|

My advice? Move to America. Europe has had too much Enayla fun for it's own good. Plus, we have like, a serious redhead deficit in America as of late.

And hey. The internet is cheaper here too.

Wb Enayla. I’m glad that you had a good time and I’m sorry that you are sad at the moment (ack! I’m just echoing what Socar said here :-/ ).

Must admit although I have a few online friends I have never actually met any of them in real life.

Yeah, have her move here.. the weather's nice.. today

That sounds like what's going to happen with a friend of mine and I.. we became awesome friends these past few months and now she's moving south for I don't know how long. Man, when great things happen, stuff gets in the way. I hate that.

Abuot the topic though.. Lunatique came up from San Diego(?) for a Sargent exhibit here in Seattle, and some friends of mine and I went down and hung out. My preconceptions matched what he ended up being like

Blitz and I ICQed for a long time before we met. Yeah.. a long time and a lot of chatting. We've hung out like.. twice, but that's ok

I've talked to people on the phone that I talked to online.. one person yesterday in fact. Yeah, it's kind of weird though.. but it's neat, I wish it happened more often.

NOVA...haha.
I new you online before we met in person. HAHA... And you were just as kind and charming as you were online
Your the only online person Ive met though.

Ive got more online palls than I can shake a stick at. I know kids younger than me and I know people like Mike May and Dan Burk who are in there 30's. Unless Im mistaken...I was sure Mike said he was in his 30's. Could be wrong though. I also Know Socar and you Enalaya. I could Meet Socar...she is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours drive from me. But Enayla...Im afrade your a bit on the spendy side for me to visit =( But some day, when your a famous book illustrator and Im just a newbee illustrator maybe I meet you at a convention or something. Or save my money and just fly over and see you and the other people I talk to in sweeden in Sweeden.
Thats a big chance you take meeting someone over seas that you only know online. I have know idea what kind of image you have of me but I think I have a good image of you.

Well I could go on for days and days. But Ill stop here.
Cheers yall.

Actually... I doubt I'll be able to draw at all for a couple of weeks. I've got so much work to do it isn't funny.

Ech... I shouldn't be complaining. Sorry folks.

As to the US... har, I won't be moving there anytime soon. I've got a cute, cuddly, fat little cat curled up on the chair next to me that says I'll never leave Sweden for as long as he's alive. Thanks for the thought though ;)

Oh, where to start on this! I have met in all 3 people I know online (2 from a wedding and they met each other online) and I have the same friendships in person with them as I do online. I am a Cyber Aunty for a wonderful little girl who was born 2 years ago. I have at least 2 soulmates on different sides of the continent and probably have more than I know.

I am planning (whether or not life allows it..work, funds, etc lol) on visiting, hmm... more than a dozen very good friends who I have chatted with on the phone, written back & forth to, etc who live in the UK. I have a friend from Crete who is making a business trip to the states who I will be meeting with, Canadian friends who I will be visiting with and one of my favorite authors is coming to the states from the UK who I will be meeting.

Yes, it is sad when a friend leaves, but just think of the memories you have made and keep that with you, that is priceless.

Aww,what a shame Enayla! I hope you'll meet her again.
I had known this cool guy on ICQ for like 2-3 years, then we met when he moved down to stockholm (city I live in)! totally cool dude heh, pitty he had to move up to "Boden" again in the north. He was a bit more silent, compared to how he is on ICQ though.
I've met about 5 people, that I know online..most of them were as I expected them to be actually.
On this forum i've only met Hurricane, he was helping me with some "buisness" harharhar :P

My best friend is from Greece, which is about 1200 km from here. We only meet at a big festival, Pepsi Island in Hungary in august every year. Except that he is now a soldier for 3 year. F*cking military.

is that just me? from socar myles' post, it sounds like socar's that "complete doll" enyala has been enjoying the company of.

anyway, i've met (at demoparties mostly) more than a hundred people i met online first, couldn't give a better estimate than than though. I currently live together with two flatmates i met online. for about another week. i'm leaving there, it didnt work out.

anyway, i've found that some aspects of a person will not be detectable online. let'S just leave it at that.

*Shakes head* No, I'm not the doll, unfortunately. I haven't seen Enayla since...well...last Christmas. No, I'm stuck here attending summer school. (Yay.) I won't be in Sweden again till this Christmas.

I'm sure you'll see her again Enayla, especially if she's your best friend as you say. Saying 'good bye' always hurts, but you can be sure that now, after actually meeting her, you know each other way better than before and therefore you greatly strengthened your friendship. this a
big bonus- don't you agree?

I have never met any online people in real life. I don't really have any online friendships the way you folks describe them. But yesterday happened something FUNNY!! I talked to a good friend of mine that I had been working on several fun projects with in the past- you must know he's an Austrian in L.A., I'm in Berlin and he goes:
"I was at the beach today and met a matte painter from Digital Domain, guess what, the guy is from Graz (Austria)!"
"Wait a minute..." I say, "... short hair, maybe even balled, glasses? did he work for digital domain, later square and others and now digital domain again?"
"Yeah" my friend says, "Loki@vigilante..."
"NO WAY" I go, "he's a member of this digital painting forum I frequently visit since a few weeks ago!"
I was just stunned to see how small the world really is! In fact it's so small Enayla, that you and your friend might just run into each other some day soon when you least expect it

Loki, if you read this, greetings from Max

Nova- I was from San Francisco when you met me.

Yep, I've only met Nova and Visionary. They were both adorable.

If I had stayed in the Bay Area, I would've met more on weekend outdoor painting trips.

Perplexer, dude - I got YOUR greetings from Max! Haha - that was funny to meet him like that. I was frolicking in the waves at Point Dume (one of my favourite beaches - I'm also freediving there a lot) and hear two guys next to me talking german. So, shy as I am, I shout "AUF GEHT'S, BURSCHN!" as the next wave towered over us. They didn't really have time to say much, because that thing came crashing down on us a few secs later. Hehe ...
Very nice guy - he sent me some frames of the music video he did - looks rockin!

So, now to the real topic:

I've met quite a few Sijunites so far.

I went to visit the Presto dudes down in San Diego. They were all awesome. Met Fred, Francis and stayed at Wacomonkeys apartment. I really enjoyed meeting them. KillaKru!

Then Frost and Snake Grunger came to visit and stayed at my house. Grunger was a little bit scared at first, because in typical Loki-manner I offered to get smashed immeadetly, which he replied to:" Loki, I like the way you work, but I don't agree with your way of life". He is a sweetheart, but makes even a big curve around open wine bottles. We had a great time nevertheless!

Meeting Frost was awesome too! We hit it off immeadetly. I consider him a very good friend of mine! We talk on ICQ quite often and I hope that he gets his ass down here to SoCali soon again!

My girlfriend and I took them to SixFlags Magic Mountain and we rollercoastered around all day long.
While they were in town we also hooked up with Spooge - great guy!

The last guys I met were Waylon and Yaz during E3. We first went to the Firehouse (which is the DD watering hole) and then partied at my house. I really enjoyed hanging out with them. Both are very nice & cool guys!

I also met some guys on the fly at Station X - but I don't remember who exactly they were - except that they were really nice too!

Oh, and I've known Darklighter for years - I met him on some other internet chatroom, which is now long defunct. I knew he was Austrian and living in LA, but I really was surprised that he lived on the same street, ca. 5mins from my house in Mar Vista. The world is small!

If anyone of you guys comes to LA - be sure to let me know!

wayfinder: sure, why not? do you work anywhere near downtown during the day?

Loki: that's funny!! you must know we only took short dips in the Wannsee in our sparetime here during the music video production, so pacific ocean waves might still leave him a little speechless sometimes- j/k . Yes, he's a great guy and he was real happy to meet another fellow compatriot from around his area. Besides, the thought of you "haberers" getting your feet wet like that is just "leiwand"... hehe!
