these might look boring to you guys, but I wanted to post something so I don't become a stranger...
I really wanna post illustrations after being inspired here in this forum, and I'm working on it...I can't show anything I'm doing at work until this movie comes out...
anyhow, I just wanted to be one of your regulars....

Sugoi!!! (did I butcher that word or what?)
anyway, what's the medium you used?
I think the woman could use maybe a little bit more work, but what do I know..
I like the free flowing feel of the first one. |

oh wow, now that i check out your site, i know who you are. hehe. how was illustration down at sva? i always wanted to apply for school there, but too expensive. ended up in FIT. too many hot babes for distraction. i still wonder how you won that 1999 society of illustrator annual student competition. there were alot of exceptional pieces there i remembered. hehe, hope you don't mind, i came to a stupid conclusion awhile back that Marvin Mattelson was the reason why the Society pick your work for the first prize. haven't gone back to see the works in that place for more than a year now. bet i lag behind even more.
and how's the studio u working in? i like to get an impression. i will be out of college soon, and like to know what opportunities are out there. ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

The first one totally rocks. I love the way you painted it. The second one is great too, but I think some brushstrokes could have been improved (?). Nevertheless I definitely will remember your name and your site. |

THanks all for nice comments and suggestions first of all.
THese are painted in water soluable oils.

A very interesting point about the Society Competition.
I agree with you that winners from the show are often not what we all agree on.
Yeah, I remember that 1999 show was a really good show. I had many of my friends' pieces from SVA, and Academy of Art College in SF. And I honestly have to say my piece was not the best piece.(or I should say I had about 10-20 pieces I
liked better than mine!)
I was merely lucky. (I'm not being modest here at all)
In terms of your comment on Mattleson's students, however, I have to correct you in the respect for other students from
his class who won awards in the past. Yes, for more than a decade, students from Mattleson's class have won many awards
at the Society. And I agree with you that some of the pieces are pretty boring realistic illustrations to win awards. But
contrary to your speculation, there's no political tie between Marvin Mattleson and the Society of Illustrators. Hope Marvin
doesn't mind me say this but he's not a popular figure among Society members.(not in a bad way..) It's not because he's a
bad man. He's a nice guy really, but he's very honest about commenting on anyone's work. (I should add that he's a great
teacher too)
I can almost say that the jurors for the show would not pick students work especially if they had known those were from Mattleson's class "if" there's such politics at judging.(they actually don't even know the student's name and school during
the judge) Make sense?(I'd like to believe there's no politics what so ever anyway)
Anyhow, all I wanted to say was competition results are almost 99% luck. Believe me.
Losing in competition is never a rejection. It's so true. Please keep that in mind especially if you are still in school.
I know it because I've interned at the Society too.
I know I was just the luckiest man that year to win the first prize. It was still nice though.
Anyhow,
sorry it became a bit too long.
d
by the way, feel free to email me questions about the studio I work at. |

hey hey, how you doing Dicet and jr?
-dicet
thanks for the info on the society. i apologize, please don't rub it the wrong way. I was just merely joking around about Mattleson. When i was still studying illustration, i came to know that Mattleson was teaching at sva, and know that he's a famous illustrator. so when i was debating with my friends as to why that you have won the award, i threw his name around. it was honestly a dumb joke.
thanks in advance for allowing me to email you regarding the studio matter. i will write you once i think up a few questions.
-jr
nice to see a few folks here that is from new york. i think i saw your website, nice work too. have you graduated yet?
anyways, the best of luck to both of you. laters |

after reread your message. i think i kinda have an idea what you mean.
yeah most of the pieces there are perhaps copy from photographs, with mean there weren't much imagination put into it.
i don't know, but it seems like a good thing and a bad thing.
for sure, they have gotten a firm grasp of their observation and control of their brush work. innovation wise, yeah it's a bit lacking, but they are still considerably young afterall. takes time. heck, i am nowhere near their quality. but i guess it's a state of mind. anyone who thinks and work hard can achieve wonders.
i think preached enough for the night.
goodnight everyone. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Inspiration is one of the best things these forums provide... I understand how hard it can be to get crits on anything except naked women, heh. Anyways, your work is very nice... it seems as if you know the medium you are painting with well. But you are too timid with your strokes! Espically your portrait. You are getting there with the still life in some places, namely the blue edges. I'd love to see more of your stuff!
Remember the most important thing is to play. By playing you will discover and make mistakes (happy mistakes ) I love "screwing up" I ALLWAYS discover something new.
Assignment:
Next painting, try something normal (doesn't hafta be extreme subject matter) but paint fast, and lose, don't worry about cutting in, lines, etc.
-take it or leave it

I really like the top one, its got a great ruff/smooth quality to it.
The second one is good too, but the broad looks likes she's sick with all that red around her cheeks and nose.
Take it easy,

first off, it is purely subjective. subject matter wise, i am not very into editorial illustrations. so i can't tell u which piece(s) are really good. but technique wise, they are good in their own rights. if u want me to nail one down, quite frankly, i say all of them. even till this day when i look back at the booklet that i got about the show, i am still amazing by the works. anyways, here's a sample page of the booklet that i fetch awhile back when i last visited the show.
here's the link.
i happened to know the guy that did the black and white piece in the center. he used pencil as the medium. www.geocities.com/larcenil/images/society.jpg
you can check out www.societyillustrators.org
to get a feel of what the mission of this organization is about. i am not sure though, but i think the Society is only in New York.

M_shady, how young where they? Copying pictures really isnt all that hard at all, its just getting your angles, curves, correct in relation to everything around it. while coming up with something in your head is a helluva lot harder, you have an image in your head, (not a hardcopy you can just take a look at.)you need to get your values/lighting/colors and proportions right, just eyeballing it, and eyeballing it comes from part experence, knowledge, and practice. alot more comes into play basically.
anyways thats why i think dicet won.(that saying if most of these are photo copys)(ive only seen the few you posted)
i hope you can look over the spelling/typing errors im horrible. |

dicet;
While I'm not much for still-life/etc., I like your use of color on the first piece...Second piece doesn't really spark any interest with me, but since you've seem to got a strong feel for what you do, more power to you. Keep up the great work! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

I went to sva and never took mattelson's class. Nothing personal, I just thought his painting technique was a bit too rigid, and technical for my tastes. Now that I look back however, I think it would have done me a lot good. Oh well.... |
