dude... it's dragonball z...
the only advice i can give you is to never draw one of those characters again. they are a horrible example of human anatomy. draw your own characters... draw ANYBODY else's character... but don't draw dragonball z anymore. i mean. don't get me wrong. i like the show. (the five minutes of actual show that isn't grunting and groaning) but the art is sub par at best.
however... you're coloring wasn't all that bad. but i can't judge the art at all, since more than likely you copied this. (not traced, copied) and even if you didn't it's in their style, not yours. and if it's yours, it's not yours. it's theirs. so umm... yeah.
that's about all i have to say on that. |

Sorry tough guy, I came here for people to crit my work, and I personally don't think there is anything wrong with looking at a refrence. Yes, I am aware it is a Dragonball Z character... and it is a cartoon, in most cartoons human anatomy is not supposed to be perfect, is not that the point of anime?

no no... you misunderstood. animation in general is not necessarily a bad place to get reference. dragonball z is. they have distorted the human form so horribly that it isn't a good place to reference anymore. i always hate when i see kids these days who grew up copying dragonball z. at least thundercats and heman looked somewhat realistic. the way they've scrunched the outfits to hide their lack of anatomic knowledge is disgusting.
and i told you already why it would be unfair to crit your art. because it isn't your art. if you said, tell me how well i was able to make this look like a drawing someone else did... i would say you did very good. but you didn't. if it was in a pose... maybe. but it's just a head. we need to see more before a decent crit can be given.

Well, I should have posted in my first post that I wanted to be crited for the color, not the picture.. like it says "I attempted to color it.." I am new to coloring, not drawing, and that picture was just something that was layout around.. |

hmmm. Akira Toriyama is actuialy a very very good artist (IMO anyway). so if you are talking about copying from the comics or promo stuff he has done for it I would have to disagree with you hamilton. it is pretty sophisticated stylisation of anatomy and although pretty distorted, rather well thought out. the animation itself is pretty poor though and doesn't hold much of what I like about Toriyama.
there is little point in copying wholesale from anything like that tho. learn the real stuff first and then you can better understand what you are seeing. by and large most (good) cartoonish styles fall into the same category as DBZ IMHO. you learn little from copying them. BUT, they do offer some great insights into how people have managed to simplify and distill the human form.
something like DBZ is probably one of the worst cases of this kind of thing. everyone sees this simplified boxy anatomy. and they think it looks easy. there is far more to it than that though. but when your are learning it is pretty much impossible to see the subtle bits in there.
with that said I really don't care much for DBZ. but Toriyama has done some brilliant stuff. the Chrono trigger manual has some of my favorite Illustrations in it. and I have an art book of his (on extended loan from a friend) great stuff. |

I completely agree with you Hamilton. Dragonballz is fun, when they aren't powering up. Heh, i wanna see a few episodes done like the baseball game pitch by pitch edits (you know where they only show you every pitch in the game so the game is condensed to a minute or something). My other problem with DBz stuff is, while its fun to watch, i think it makes poor line art. The stuff i like about DBZ is how alive and energized it feels, and its almost impossible to capture it in 1 still, because by its self i think DBz art kinda sucks. :/
On to the actual kritik of the picture! The picture seemed fine for a cartoony scetch, the lines were a little too scetchy at some places. I liked the colored version, it really added to the picture. |

It's a strictly personal opinion of mine but I have to say this - I like anime in general, and am striving to learn the great technique, but DBZ is one of my least favourite styles of Japanese animation...
The colouring is not too bad, although you didn't show anything spectacular.
And to finish it off, hamilton has a bit of a point. There is nothing wrong with drawing anime or DBZ in general, but so many youngsters have went this seemingly easy path, it is worn to death. Talent lies in showing anime from fresh viewpoints, not a copied and re-copied angles and poses.
Enjoy! |
