well I can't give you any advice on the gouaches since I have never tried it, but they look good.
Now the character, MAN that looks cool. He's got SO MUCH personality. Awesome looking. Oh and welcome to the board.

one little suggetion: the color seemed a little too gray. If you can make sharp contrast to show different layer it may look better  |

thanks for the compliments and the suggestions! Yes, I've been posting on Shane's Drawing board but I think Sijun's Forum is more for me since its members are more of painters.
Also this will give me good inspiration to work on my personal illustration. I've been fed up with work illustrations lately... |

Those looks good, altho the atmospheric perspective seen a bit odd on the top one.
The bottom one has an odd perspecrive, but the light spots/highlights makes it look cool. Nice blue shade on the lit leafs (blue sky reflection I guess), whilst the bottom of the leafs is yellow/green due to the light passing thru them. Hmm, gotta remember that. That rule also apply to human ears, that goes red when light passes thru them...

Great Guache work.. i never been able to do well with guaches. i love your site too.. love the name "simplestroke" kinda akin to Craig's "Goodbrush" well in any event.. your site has been respectfully bookmarked.. oh yah.. nice tutorial on your site..
Good luck in your future endeavors.. love to see more..
