I've been really busy with a flood of freelance work. Unfortunately, I can't post most of that. However, here's a cover I can post which was done for the upcoming issue of Mangaphile. The scheduled cover didn't show so I had to come up with something in 2 days. It's not really finished --there's a lot I'd still like to do with it-- but I ran out of time. I literally worked on this one until the VERY last minute before it needed to be go to the printer.

Done in Painter 6, total paint time ~15 hours, including the initial sketches.

Also, here's a largerdetail shot for those interested.

I really like this, very cool. I have a few problems with the torso but will not bother to point them out as you said that it isn't done to your liking. I love the head piece design and texture. This is a very nice style, it reminds me of something I saw in the Spectrum annual, to the point of wondering if those were your pieces.

Awesome work.

Very impressive. Reminds me of the queen in Star War I.^-^
If you can make her face more smooth, maybe she will be more attractive.
Hope we can see your other works soon.

Thanks for the cool comments guys.

adigra: I love Spectrum. I buy it every year now. I've never been in it. Maybe some day. Seeg, who visits this forum on a regular basis, has been though. With the talent lurking around here it wouldn't surprise me if there were others.

ebrian: Yeah, it does kinda look like the princess in SW, now that you mention it. I had my GF stand under the ceiling fan light for a little bit and used her for reference. Believe me, she doesn't look anything like Natalie Portman. And since my GF is standing over my shoulder reading this I should add she's much better looking.

burnOut: I had budgeted my time improperly on the piece because I'm used to having a little more. I spent a lot of time dinking around on the head area but as the deadline loomed I realized I hadn't even worked the hands or the torso. They're shamefully underbaked compared to the rest of the image; I plan to rework all of that ASAP.

Fantastic work to see the least. She is very pretty and picture seems to convey the message quite well. How long did it take you do it all?

Hey man,
beautiful work! You said you used Painter 6. I'm curious how fast your computer is and if you run into "brush lag" working at resolutions suitable for print (300 dpi, 12"x9" or larger) like this piece is? I've had these problems and have tried to switch to photoshop but I miss the natural brushed look of Painter. Is the lag bearable if you just take your time?

In the future, we're going to draw in manga style?
Damn. I hate manga.

Now as for the VR psuedo-touchscreen, I built one. They don't work too well. Drawing with your fingertip, actually doesn't give the full range of techincal abilities a brush or pencil does. So I had to change the program to create a Vr brush to hold. Then the I could use the brush to control what I wanted better. And yes, I'm just making this up.

Love this painting.

Viridae - Whole thing took about 15-16 hours I think.

hethebar - I've got a Mac G3/450. I get brush lag too when I make docs as big as yours. However, since Painter images are naturally anti-aliased and rich with noise/brush work they blow up VERY well. Consequently, my Painter work for publication is rendered at about 200-250 dpi. That helps cut the lag a lot. Next, I use lots of custom brushes with some of the details turned down so their optimized for speed. I also tend to only use the tools which are quick... so many of my images start as watercolor washes because I can build up tones very rapidly.

Seraphire - The painting was for a book called Mangaphile. Lots of people lump the art style of manga (big eyes and speedlines) with the myriad of story-telling techniques in manga. I can take or leave most of the styles, but the visual narrative and pacing of manga is another subject entirely. It's effective, graphic and powerful. These effective (though less obvious) visual story-telling techniques are being tapped all over the place --like by the Wachowski brothers for the Matrix, etc.

synj - Regardless of whether you like it or not, it is the most popular comic style in the world. The US is practically the only hold-out --and it's following here is growing. In stark contrast to the endangered US comic industry, anime is a popular and thriving art form. It's pure supposition on my part but I'd wager it's success will guarantee it'll be around for a while.

Lukias - Thanks! There's a LOT of good work on this forum. I don't know that my work is more original than other's, but even if it's not true I don't mind hearing it!

-------------------

I'm heading to San Diego Comic Con early tomorrow morning. If you're going, please stop by the Radio Comix booth (#1416) and say "Hi!" I'd love to talk shop with any other digital artists out there.

great picture !! love the colors and shading. Maybe the wires in her head could be chopped of in a different way than with fading, or maybe even go all the way out of the picture ? Just nitpicking
