Perplexer: yes, I did choose a different approach.

The glass of the main building with the whole and the gurders are rendered. Would make no sense painting those, when you can get them correct and straight in 3D.
There's actually a lot of 3D in there.
But on that job the shortest way that gave me the desired effect was the only way to go, since this thing is so huge.

One of the tougher things was matching the camera to the plate. I had no lens information AND the plate was anamorphic (cinemascope - the image is horizontally squeezed through a special lens when being put on film, and unsqueezed through a special lens when being projected) - so there was all kinds of weirdness going on.

During work I had to change my approach once too - which shaved valuable time off my schedule... Well - it's all about learning, isn't it?

It all blends in perfectly and I find it a very interesting approach. Good job- as usual.

I am sure you already know the site of Eric Hanson (http://members.loop.com/~ehanson/renderings/rend.html), you might even know him personally since he was with Digital Domain in 96/97 while he worked closely with Mark Stetson on 'The Fifth Element'- like you did.
His mattes are pretty much exclusively 3D (some matte elements in the shots he worked on were done by painters however). I think the combination of both, 3D and painting, is a very interesting as well as economical approach because it seems to broaden the range of possibilities very much.

On a side note: Are you planning on making some of your work for Final Fantasy available on your site by any chance? I am really curious about the picture because I have been anxiously awaiting it for years. I am extremely disappointed that it doesn't seem to do so good at the box offices- maybe the broad public is not ready yet...
