Most European countries still have some form of national service. The funny thing is, there seems to be a direct correlation between a country having compulsory national service and a country having a below-average crime rate. Not much consolation if you are one of the poor buggers forced to do it, granted, but interesting nonetheless.
Maybe if the UK had it I would have a bit more self-discipline |

Until I have to meet my fate. Also known as "the army".
Damn it all to hell.
Just thought I'd vent, feel free to ignore. |

Chris, used to be 12 months minimum, now it's technically 6 months.
I'm going to be there for a minimum of 9 months (because I'm going to the Rapid Deployment Force, which is "specialized"), maybe 12 depending on how I fit in/like it.
I have nothing against the army as such, but it's a year outta my life that I could spend on something more... meaningful. |

It's interesting to note that just about every single country out there (both in Europe and in the Americas) have mandatory military service.
What do you think, builds character or waste of time? |

hmm... mostly waste of time. but i heard, its good for a democracy because the danger, that the military takes over command is lower. err... like in chile. |

Went thru 10 months. Bootcamp sucked most. Don't act up and don't yell "here sir" when they are askin' for a volunteer and you'll be just fine. |
