This one of the coolest threads lately i think. Wish i had more time to participate!
Joachim's hands & fingers are ruined from all the typing so he asked me to write some comments, so here goes:
Totally: Looks cool! you read the facial planes and proportions well. Cheek and nose is very well done. Some things like the mouth and some of the forehead seems to be out of perspective and the eyes seems a little flat, try to shade them like spheres.
Ear seems a little muddy(and grey) and so do some of the other shadows.
Waylon: Nice! I like this one. Proportions of the face and the shape of the head looks correct. Look closer on the neck and try to see all the subtle shapes. There's more going on there than you think. It's easy to think of the neck as only a cylinder.
The shadows on the nose could maybe be a little harder(and darker).
If you squint with your eyes only the nostrills are visible.
Fragancia: Did you paint over a photo? The shirt really looks like it. The shading would be better since you're proportions are perfect.
If that is the case i would suggest drawing completely freehand to begin with. You'll get a better understanding for shapes, colours and values that way. Copy it instead
and try to analyse what you see and remember it. After a lot of training you'll notice
a big difference not needing to be too dependent on using photos. Also, draw from life. The best advice i can give.
Binke: Found a Trooper armour yet?
I like the colours in this one and i can tell that it looks like you. The only thing i could crit is the neck being too long, not much..just a little. Nose seems to be a little out of perspective(look at the right nostril) Also for the sake of the first impression, the picture could be cropped a little more(i brdden)
DRAGooN:
shape of head looks mainly good. some of the features looks too blurred, melted into the face. Some things like the nose, ear and mouth are actually more sharper than we think. Try to think planes when shading, it's always easier to read than smooth shading. Hair is Volume, think of it as
a shape with volume, it's not necessary to paint every hair on the head. If you study
a lot of photos carefully you'll notice that you'll not gonna need it. Draw/paint what you see. No more, no less. You'll notice that you'll be saving yourself for a lot of hard work that way. The eyes are too small(the pupils and iris), and lips too thin
and are not connected to the face naturally.
A good thing could be to study for example the nose and mouth and see how they are connected to the rest of the face. Try to draw them from different perspectives.
Colours,.. Be careful using such strong and bright colour in the background(especially when using such desaturated and non-contrast colours on the head) It takes away the focus from the face. Why is your head cut off?
Do the shoulders and the picture would give a much better first impression and finished look to it. Hope that this can help you out
Gordillo/Phil Collins ): Very nice indeed! I like the colour on this and the slightly exagerated shapes of the face. Great work!
Burnout: Cool! I like the skin tones on this one. However, some of the parts of the face
lack a little more contrasts, like the eyes.
The right one looks a little flat. Also, the neck part looks a bit confusing to me.
Love the way you did the nose and lips!
Tron: I like roundeyes drawing too.
Akira_x: You did this one with a layer on top of a photo as far as i remember.
You could check out the reply i wrote for Fragancia. Just one note. It's risky to
start with just certain parts, shade them and then move on to another. That way you'll loose overview of the picture as a whole.
Thinking of the face in planes is also good, cause you'll get everything down right away. Quick and easy.
Swami: I really like this one. Just be carefull with those sharp lines(neck and hair) There's a weird light spot under your cheek. Just be more aware of the values.
Iespecially dig your choice of colours and the ear. Good work!
Cool to see verybody joining this thread
I'm off. Need a beer...Badly!

Great thread though. If only Fred were still here eh?

I thought I'd try some color today after I got home from work so being the lazy bastard I am I just painted over my first self-portrait attempt. I didn't use the mirror to do the colors (I can't find the mirror now) so I just went from memory. It was looking mighty ugly at first and I started from scratch twice. But then I figured out part of my problem and got further then I thought I would.
Still my lack of understanding with colors limits how well I can pull this off (you'll notice I resorted to using the dodge tool) but I learned quite a bit in the last 30 minutes or so. For example: Taking a few steps back from the painting helps identify problems with color usage/placement, but for me it is just as easy to take off my glasses (I knew my myopia would come in handy for something ).

Hi everyone!
I've done a self-portrait too!
This is my first post here, so if you plan on commenting the picture - please be kind.
(It's really weird how silly you look when you're concentrated and looking into a mirror...)
I mostly do 3D stuff, so I rarely get to draw like this. But watching this thread really got me inspired!
Heia Joachim & Micke!
Cheers,
Rune

Hey again, wow, this thread never seem to die out. Great portraits again ! Hehe, so well, I guess I must type some more
ceenda, looks cery good. I like the face expression and the proportions ! Maybe some harder edges could be nice, like around the noe and maybe some more defined areas around the eyes? but very nice work !
gimbal8, much better light on this one. Make the face more alive and interessting. a bit to much bright burn feeling in the forehead and nose ? , but nice !
drzulu, looks good. the shading is a bit too muddy I though, I think. also, some small perspective problems between the mouth & nose & eyes, not big mistakes though. But, the neck see a bit ackward. a few small fixes and I think it can look much better, but good !
dryfire, that's and odd one I think it has some cool things to it, but I have problems commenting since it rather cartoony shaded. The colors could be more interessting though, I think. now it's just brown red and blue and they don't affect eachother. Also, some darker areas and definitions could improve alot in my opinion.
acryl, nice !! Much better light and material definitions in this one. small little thing, I have problems seeing if it is your teeths or tongue showing or if it's suppose to be just a hole. but, very nice !
rune, whohah ! So nice to see that you've decided to come over here as well ! ANd, loong time since I've seen you paint something Looks very nice though. I like the way you've shaded it,with the different colors very separated. maybe a few small proportions, like olve mentioned that could be improved a bit, but nothing that bugs my eye in any big amount. And, it looks like you too ! NICE ! -figuredrawing monday !
dthind, looks good, I like the colors and values a lot. I don't know if I'm wrong or not, but somehow it seems like you started with the photo under, and not as reference, which makes things a bit of cheating. But, I don't want to accuse you, because I could be wrong, but for your own sake if that is the case, I think you should try make one and only look at the picture. Nonetheless, a few ares looks a bit smudgy undefined, like the nose mouth, maybe sharp up the edges a bit..(?)
sacrelicious, nice ! I like the stylized look of it. nothing about it that bugs me. Hard to give any critics as long as it is in such a style, but I like it though. |

Hey everyone, I'm sorry that I haven't been too active commenting on the portraits. THough, it hasn't been to many that has been added, but I feel bad anyway
I like them all, just so that is said, so here's only the remark I think that could be improved ...
scoop, looks good. the proportions aren't bad at all. Only, colors are a bit too monochromic. like the skin color has only one tone. Also, the shadowing and shading could be a bit more defined. Also, the shapes, especially on the eye. I think the ear is a bit to far down on the head aswell.
topeira, proportions are good ! also, the face expression. Two things, the colors could be improved, like feebsaint mentioned in your thread. But, though, I always think that you can get away with whatever unusual colors, as long as you do something about it. If you had some more color variation in the face and also added more excitement into the shadows and contrast. Then, I don't mean a different lightsetting, but more subtle differences in the highlights, defining the shading on the skin better, etc. Also, I think you should add the shoulders, it's always bad to just crop a head aroung the neck like that.
klaivu, I like this one a lot. Like last time, nice colors and nice values. And, the contrasts are really good. Not a spineless neck this time but still, I think the neck should have more shape and details...not shading, but the shape of it. It's so easy that it jsut look like a tube, and then it doesn't fit the head. But, don't get me wrong, it's not as crucial as it sounds.
dr-zulu, nice. I think the neck looks a bit wrong, on this one. ALso, the back of the skull looks a bit small. so the whole head almost look as if it's a smooth connection with the neck, give more clear shapes from the skull around the the cheeks and the head shape itself. Also, the eye color looks a bit selfilluminated and not affected by the color in the scene/setting. Also, the lines of the eyes could be more carefully drawn, how the the top and bottom line meets, there's much more things going on. |

Sorry, I'm a lazy bastard, but now I'll answer the rest...
topeira, well, hehe yeah, that neck needs shoulders, seriously. Also, I think the neck is way to wide out on the back of the head.
The proportions looks good in the face on this one also. But, still it need some work on the coloring and shading, to give the right feeling of skin texture and facial colors. try to be much more observant on colors in your face, the subtle differences and go more in detail with the contrasts. Then I don't mean more details, but the right values. Think planes of values and color. build it up from gound. first the middle values, overall shape, then further down in contrasts and planes and add the light. That's a clean way to work. SIlly me, I took the wrong portrait from you, but I hope it can still give you an idea..
synj, haha, cool as always, love your style. And, it looks like you I think
..how's things in presto ?
flexible, very nice portrait ! I'm always amazed by you precisement of lines and shapes you have. maybe the facial colors could be a bit less monochromic, but then again, it looks good this way as well. Everything can look good when it's made by a confident artist |

Nova: quick comment - I think it would look a lot better if you dropped the eye and shortened the nose, at least by the height of the eye. It's all up too far.
(Assuming you dont really look like that )
