Ok, I'm NOT giving up, damnit. I've been practising a little every day, and I also finally went and got a new light for my studio. Unfortunately this image took a good deal more than 15 minutes to paint... I also chose not to paint my glasses, but since I'm practically blind without them I had to wear them, and make some guesses around the eyes.

hey again,

just thought I'd answer the latest posts to this thread that has become amazing, in my eyes atleast.

sammy, nice one ! I like it a lot. Hard to critisize, because it's rather exaggerated/abstract, but I do like it very much. maybe a few darker strokes here and there could improve certain areas, like the lip area ?!?

salty dog, very nice too ! Cartoony caricature, which are cool too....love it!

frost, you are really too humble. I think you did a great job. the proportions are good and the values are amazing ..-looks almost real ! Only little comment, though it doesn't really affect this one very negative, is to add some more defined strokes. I think I've mentioned this a few time before as well, but, here's an example of what I'm trying to say...(I exaggerated it to illustrate it clearer)..just a bit of this, to get a bit more definition would be good I think.

-btw, didn't hear from you after I commented you picture on mail, did you disagree and didn't dare to tell ? hope you didn't get mad at me

ugly, still I think it needs more dark areas around nose, etc, to make it come out. Though, your photo wasn't maybe the best reference though...since it has sush strong front light, but then it can be good to enhanse things on your own.

steven, really nice ! I prefer the skin colors and the values on this a lot more. I really like the darker areas, like the ear, etc. Really great job ! Only little comment, I don't know which one of the two portraits that look the most like you, but I feel the two don't look like the same person. But, maybe that is just because I don't know you in person, it can be like that some times. I often do a portrait that people that don't know me wouldn't see the resemblance in, but friends would laugh and say "that is just like you".

klaivu, hope you didn't get offended by my remark ? It wasn't my intention

tron, cool photo, looking forward to see the portrait

Joa: No, I didn't get upset. I was mostly depressed as it seems to be something I need a ***LOT*** of work at (simplifying). I very seriously need to get my ass in figure drawing classes and such.

I thank you for the very good and pertinent comments my friend. =)

Joachim: thanks for your comments, both for the ones to me and to everybody else, you're doing a great job with this thread.

Yes I think this does NOT look 100% like me, not even 90%, and the reason is simple - I have HUGE problems drawing things without distortion and bias. The features float around, refusing to arrange themselves exactly the way they are in reality (especially on such a 3/4 view as this). I've always had this problem, and I'm beginning to think now it is my biggest problem.

Could it be the strong glasses I wear? Probably not, just the way my brain works. Does anybody know a good exercise that targets this weakness? I've tried flipping the image, coming back to it later, etc. I guess I'll just start from scratch over and over.

I just had a thought - since I'm looking at a 3d face fairly close up - my own face in the mirror about a yard away - there will be a distinct parallax error between my two eyes (the image changes noticeably from left to right eye). Could this be part of my problem? Does this mean I should close one eye when painting such a portrait?

Anyway I just uploaded a new version (again), it's starting to look a little more like me now.

BTW Dangeruss, love it!

Steven

Thanks again Joachim, excellent paintovers - I see exactly what you're doin'. Stronger-looser brush strokes -- that's the style I prefer - like Sarolla, Sargent or Zorn. I tend to render and blend the hell out of things rather than use individual brush strokes like you demonstrate.

This is a great learning thread...so much really good work here in individual styles --it's all amazing.

Steven - you're pretty hard on yourself, especially when you pick that most difficult of angles with its foreshortening problems. That 3/4 up and back view is very very tough and very frustrating all by itself.

Dangeruss - nice strong but loose brushstrokes like I wish I could do... If it was me...I might try "sharpening the focus" just on the eyes and a little bit on the mouth and 'stache leaving everything else loose as-is. Looks like classic alla-prima oils portraiture. Damn good.

Elessil - thanks for taking time to do all the crits. Yep, I turned green somehow. I go green a lot in my pictures, seems to be a problem for me, will work on it.

wo0o here's my first actual piece of art in... almost a month... haven't done much of anything since the college semester ended =\

the full resolution version can be found here: http://www.perilith.com/~totally/selfportrait2highres.jpg
the Making of Dave Video can be found here: http://www.perilith.com/~totally/selfpdave.avi

I'm gonna go ahead and start a new topic with this here self portrait too...
I attempted one before this that was an utter failure... the placement of the mirror in that failure made it rather awkward to paint with the tablet, so for this one I just put the little mirror on top of the monitor... didn't have to strain to turn and look or bend or twist or any crazy awkward stuff...

Ok, ok, me too.

Sketched in pencil, scanned it in, fixed proportions and stuff, and shaded as if I was applying an ink wash. I think it turned out pretty good, except for the hair. Any crits?

waylon: Nice portrait. If I may point out something, the shadow under the nose is pretty light. I think it takes away a certain amount of depth that could be there. Kinda like your nose is very short. That is all I could see.

Good call, bishop. I fixed it (along with a few other things that stuck out at me, now that I haven't looked at it in a few hours.)
Thanks!

Waylon! I took the liberty of mutilating your portrait, having seen you a few times in real life, and having a couple of digital images of you on my hard-drive (hrmm). I don't think I made you look more like yourself, but I felt as though a light source/shadows should be more visible to give your head more depth and shape.

sgrunger: whoops, a little late, here. Thanks for the paintover. Yeah, I guess I went a little bit light with my shading.

Hmm. Actually, since I had all my shading on a separate layer, I just went in and duplicated that layer. Aside from emphasizing all the areas where I was sloppy, it looks a lot better. Yay! Though I don't think I'll post it, since I don't feel like cleaning it up right now. Oh well, maybe next time.
