Joachim, you rule.

While I have your attention, I was wondering.. how exactly do you pronounce your name?

Is it Joe-a-sheem? Yo-a-keem? Joe-a-chim? When I read your posts I always pronounce it Joe-a-sheem mentally. Am I right?

Sorry for this idiotic little side conversation guys

Ok.. another try.. still don't really understand how/when to use those "subtle" colors Joachim's talking about, hrmm. I've came to notice that the light-setting in my basement sucks. Only one spot, neon on the celing. Next I'll try to put a lamp somewhere to shed hard light on my face so I can draw cast shadows and stuff. Oh, and find a way to put that mirror of mine on top of my monitor.

I stole a few of Joachim's colors with the color picker But I didn't really end up using only them, and after a few overlays and all, I think nobody could notice it..

Joachim is pronounced "wah-KEEM". I'm pretty sure.

Is that a non-Giger-McKean-hiddenpenis-traditional nice portrait of faust|gfx?

Now I've seen everything.

Well... I've been wanting to do this for a while but I don't have a mirror so it made it very difficult. The closest thing I could get was my reflection in one of the photographs hanging on my wall. So I took it down, set it in front of me and tried to draw myself reflected in the picture frame's glass. Unfortunately it was pretty hard to see and it didn't come out as cool as I'd hoped... but I like the idea anyway

Here's my failed try.

Couldn't get the colors or the prespective right, I won't even finish it. I've just realized I can't paint glasses .

Never did any kind of self portrait before. I don't like it. The more it looked like me the more it wierded me out.

I can't do color stuff...yet, so here a grey and white version. Tough lighting. I have flood lights in the ceiling above me, the computer screen in front of me and the mirror bouncing light back at me.

roundeye: I like the first one you did better for some reason. It almost looks as if you did the cover art for the Star Wars RPG rulebook.

Ah ! More nice portraits, seems like this thread really took off, which I'm really glad about !

tinush, ah, that's sad. I think you would have managed, why not go for it ?

frosted flame, haha, well, how I pronounce it...I think the "Yo-a-keem" is pretty close....or if you say the "a" as you say it in norwegian that is, which is not like "ey" but "ah"...so "To-ah-keem" should be pretty correct. hehe, silly answer to a silly question

roundeye, nice portraits ! I like them both, but for some reason I prefer the one with the original colors best....only thing on that, the eye pupil has a bit bright darkest color, it usually gives more life in the eye if you keep the pupil's darkest darker than what is around the eye....stupid explanation, but I had to write something.

neebhore, nice portrait !
I like the colors a lot, the subtle variations around the eyes etc...Only comment that I have would be to sharpen a few areas maybe, like ex around the nose etc, maybe it blends a bit too much into eachother in certain areas ?....don't know if you want it to be that way though ?

richtoon. Nice !proportions and all seems good. I don't know what else to comment, since you've kept the linework, the shading inside isn't that nescessary.

dr.zulu, overall proportions look good! THe shading though seem a bit uncertain, a bit too muddy. Also, certain things like the ear and nose tip could be a bit better defined.

nickmarksdotcom, hehe cool one !

francis, I think maybe this one got a bit more stiff again. But, wait, I will answer yiyr mail, just give me a few days, ok -I'm busy this weekend.

jezebel, cool ! Believe it not, I also had an idea that I wanted to draw my reflection in a window with the rest of what was behind. But, you did it first, so I won't try hard to give any more comments about the face itself, but the picture looks good.

merekat, very nice ! I was going to say that I thought the different elements like hair and the skin, etc had different color tones and that you could add a bit of color influence and variation in the different elements. But, this is done with Illustrator ?? Well, I know that that is something that you must do when you make something there, but I didn't know it was possible to make such well detailed pictures in such a program. It must have been a lot of hard work ?

grendel Khan, nice !! I like the face and the facial colors a lot ! very nice and stylized. Maybe a few areas could have needed a bit more definition, but then again, maybe not....I like it this way. Only thing though, the neck seem a bit wrong according to the head, but, it might just be becasue you haven't pained the end of it, I mean the beginning og the shoulders. anyway, nice work !

gimbal8, looks good ! Maybe a few more subtle elements and contrasts in different areas could be good, to lifen it up a bit. Also, the light seem a bit "boring" like a flashlight straight from front. That can be cool to, but then it demands a big amount of other subtle details to get the energy into it.
red leader, hehe, I like that one ! Looks almost like you are some easy listening fansy artist or something, like that toa-tei guy, if you know him ? Maybe the transition from the cheeks to the neck could be more defined (?) but in a way it's very cool this way too, like you are some sort of "rubber man"

Frosted Flame, JeffTheKing- Thanks guys, I'm going to try to throw together a web page within the next month before I head off to the San Diego Comic Con.

Joachim- God, I hope being an easy listening fansy artist is a good thing... I was not crazy about the neck transition either, but that's what showed in the mirror (weird light angle) so what the hell, I'll leave it. I am the Rubber Man!

[edit] ok, I fixed the neck a bit...but just a bit.

Joachim -
Great thread you started. I stole some time to set up a mirror and did one last night...gaak! Crits please.

Kind of an older-tired-looking, very serious version of me. Hard, enjoyable work. Struggle-fun. I started to spend just an hour on this, but 3 hours later I realized I got carried away and rendered the life out of it - way too tight on the face. Hehheh...My wife thinks it's cool, but I only see that the eye sizes are off, I gave myself a bigger-than-life nose, shorted the top of my head and contracted jaundice (yellow-mottled-skin) somehow. Oh well, somehow there's a resemblance, and I think I'm beginning to see a few correct tones and reflected light a tiny bit better. The very close dark tones were hard for me... the shadow-side of the head kept disappearing into the background. I really tried to keep the "cast" shadows darker than the planes that are in simple shadow as well as darker than the areas that have reflected light. Some success at that, I think. Painter image. Original image about 3.5 times bigger. Haven't done this kind of exercise in many moons. I should do many more. Time to sign up for that portrait class...

...hadda fix some spelling...

I've tried to make it a little more painted than line art-ish. This is most likely as far as I'll take it. I don't know about all of you but I found it very depressing drawing and painting my mug in such a frightfully serious (almost freaky mad) state!! I tried to smile but it was painfully obvious that I couldn't do it. I'm tempted to take a picture of myself smiling...making a face...anything and start over because I find my portrait to look more like one of those "artist sketches" they show in the news...

"The suspect was last seen in town with a severe chip on his shoulder! If you see this angry-looking man in your area please call the tickle authorities immediately!!"

Grendel Khan, did you use Photoshop to paint that portrait (page 2)? If so, what brush did you use? I looks SO cool! (Ballistic and Joachim also had this same 'touch' to their portraits)

oscar, no I used painter classic to do my portrait, I painted it with the oil pastel brush (under chalk). I guess you could get a similar effect in photoshop using a "grainy" selection and an opaque brush, I've never tried it so I don't really know if it could work. I think Joachim an ballistic did theirs with photoshop, they can probably help you more if you want to do it in photoshop.

Joachim, you've put a lot of efford to comment everybody's portraits! . I agree with your comment on the neck of my portrait, but I think the nose I did is really wrong, doesn't look like mine at all. Red Leader's nose looks more like mine that what I painted .

Roundeye, I love the technique you used in your portrait, really detailed. Well, I'm enjoying all the portraits so far.
