Hey, what a fun tread you've started here Joachim. When I arrived Innerloop Studios this afternoon, Micke was busy painting his selfportrait for your tread. I was really inspired by the work here so here's my own contribution.

Well, I realize this isn't exactly painted but it started out as me! Really! And I assure all of you that this was done before I saw Disney's "The Emperors New Groove". So I didn't rip it off. But it looks strangely like Cusko (spelling?) if he were a real llama-man.

Another smudgy portrait by me.
I'm not very good at this but I think it's a great practice. And it's quite fun too.

Ok. Here's me again (reposting because of wrong server and s**t the last time):
Also did a loose one this morning between 7 and 8, or so, after a sleepless night. Guess I loosened up my face as well.... I guess this one is expressing more how I felt than what I actually look(ed) like.
Maybe we should try with some funny faces as well?

Ok I'm taking the suggestion to try something more extreme, a good suggestion since it's totally against my nature. (I simply used my first portrait as reference.)

Hey guys, wow, so much great portraits !!! I really love that so many people find this type of topic interessting.
Since I'm the one that started this thread, I feel kind of obliged to give everyone a few comments. But, just do you know, I started this thread for fun and I don't want or have the right expertise to tell you what you should do, so take what I said just as a little personal comment from one artist to another...mmmk ?
ewoooooz, looks very nice and it looks like you as well. maybe you could work a bit on your shading techniques, take bigger areas and then work them down, it might get your shading and surface more "rich"...can't find the right word, but I hope you understand. Also, maybe you could have a bit darker colors in the pupil, I think it could have added more life in the eyes.
slightlytwisted, nice ! ...looks like you are making yourself as a werewolf ? I think the eyes looks a bit out of allignment, but it's no "big" deal. some more defining in the light/shadow and also in different areas/edges could be nice. the hair as well, looks like you've used some sort of technique, I've always been a bit against that there's special techniques to do things, because it often looks like it's done in a different way than the rest. But, don't get me wrong, the portrait in nice !
enayla, looks very nice. As always, you draw nice and accurate facial proportions. I could say that you could make some few harder edges here and there to add some more dynamic, but I know that this is the way you like to do things and also you do your style very well. Two things that could be fun to see you trying out though, is to 1. vary the type of light, meaning how soft or hard the falloff would be and maybe add some of those less perfect parts of a face, like the small color variations in cheeks, around eyes, were there much or little growth of hair. -It could increase the effect of what colors the original material has before it's litted. ...don't know if you agree though, but great work anyway, you look like a pretty girl
roundeye, You have a great style I think. I love the way your linework looks, the combination of thick and thin lines and the overall exaggeration of proportions. I would love to see you doing a selfportrait in realistic style as well....but still keep your style intact. -btw, your style reminds me of someones, which I've seen in a comic long time ago, but I can't remeber whoose, and I don't think the comic is that famous, so I won't be able to dig it up, sorry. -you should do a website btw
dixter, great job. This is without doubt the best I've seen of your work yet. Precise and nicely shaded. I think your first portrait is better than your last, my personal opinion. It has more excitement going on, both in the shading and light, and it's less "cartoony"...but they are both good. You should do more of this type of stuff.
Acj_Bizar, well, I have problems commenting this one, sorry, but since it's so "abstract" and not a mirror-portrait as the topic is about, I feel that I would go away from what this is about starting to commenting yours. -try doing a selfportrait from mirror, you won't regret :-)
DarkStalker1, well, about the face, I don't know if it's a self portrait or just a face. so I feel that I can only comment your technique. I think you should practise more with light and shadow, as it's very hard for me now to see were the lightsource is. If you shade without a clear light and shadow, it can easily look more smudgy and dirty more than light. also more defining of the different elements could be nice.
snakegrunger, This one is much better! eyes looks better and colors are improved. Still, some more variation and subtle details and variation in shapes could improve a lot more as well. Not you look very sterile, like one of the Kraftwerk covers, hehe. But, it's big improvements, so keep on doing them, and I think you will automaticly see clearer what I'm talking about. Much of this comes from amounts and not something you can just be aware of and then it's done. I guess that's one of those things in art that is impossible through a lifetime master to the max
golongoria, first off the proportians looks a bit off. the skull is too small and the left eye (from our view) is to far left or the head to wide. Also, the light looks a bit undefined, which makes the drawing a bit flat. If you want, you should try to do another one with these things in mind.
dangerousbotany, This is kinda different, as it's a photo manipulation, so I can't crit. But, it looks really great as for what it is.
spooge, nice portrait !! sound stupid, but I was actually planning to do a very simmilar portrait as yours, one were the face almost disappears in darkness. Maybe it could be nice with some really subtle contrasts on the dark side, around the eye or something, just so that you can sense the other side just a bit more. But, then again, that's something you often do really well, so it would have been your attention you would have done it, hehe.
tayete, nice portrait. nothing much to crit, would be cool if you painted it. Also, maybe you could have drawn more or defined the skull around the face a bit more ?!?, the face would have looked more solid then I think. But, the facial elements are really nice !
morbid guy/kyri, looks really nice. The colors are great I think. only thing I think that could have looked better, is a smaller about lumps, bigger strokes.
chunkey, Yes, I agree that the glasses don't fit the softy-ness of the rest of the face. Also, I think you could have added a lot more color (or none). Another thing is that I miss a bit of darker and more defined areas, like eyelashes, the nose, ear, etc....try again and make a lightsetting around your face in the mirror and see if you can addapt to your drawing.
olve, very cool portraits !...and it really looks like you ! ...you look more dangerous now than before
bg, the portrait looks good ! colors and all. but I miss is something that I think I've mentioned too many times to everyone allready, more harder edges and more definition of things. like around the lips the nose, etc...also, the back of your neck looks a bit small, I think it should maybe have gone a bit further back than the cheek (?)
justing, very nice portrait, as always ! You have a sharper definition and more edges, I like that. Maybe the eye in the dark side is a bit to bright compared to the skintone ? It looks a bit self-illuminating.
tinush, nice cartoony portrait. Nothing wrong with it as that, would be nice to see you doing a realistic one too !
steven, cool that you've given it an attempt in that direction. I don't know if you agree or not, but I think the protrait looks a bit too saturated. I think it could have looked a lot nicer if you varied the amount of color and saturation, depending on what you want to "enhance". Because then you create the variation that makes it more interessting. also, I think that the definition of things kind of got a bit lost when you made that second stroke. But, still, don't get me wrong, your portrait was really good, I think, and this has some nice things with it as well !
nova, nice portraits ! I'll comment the secon one since that's your newest. I like it a lot. nice variation of soft and hard areas. the only nitpicking I can say is that the nose seems to disappear after the tip, something that might be too "cartoony" with the type of realism you have. Also, the har might need some harder areas give a better visual of the hairtype and if you find a better way to make the illusion of thin har straws certain areas, like some thick lines that indicates a lot of small ones, without getting stuck with detals, it could improve I think (?) ...-btw, the cheek and nose looks much better in the colored version.-will you draw the whole face ?
seagull, I think I've seen that portrait before. I sait it then as well, I think it looks really cool. Very eagon schiele feeling to it. Would be cool if you gave a mirror portrait a try !
acryl, nice of you to join as well. It looks very good ! Only I think the glasses and the ear could need some extra work. Now, it almost looks like the glasses are an extra layer that was placed on, but it doesn't look like the belong to the same scene/light -maybe I'm just stupid . Also, I think a few of the highlights are a bit to litted, it's on the limit, but I've noticed that you often add the light to be very consentrated and litted, which easily can give a very metallic feeling to every material, be careful with that and be more conserned with how the light works with the actual material . but, don't get me wrong acryl, very nice work and the portrait looks good the skin texture looks very nice !
evon, nice selfportrait ! I don't think it's ugly at all. Maybe a different lightsetting would be more interessting, a less flash-lamp kind of light ? and more variation of material and color on different areas like nose, etc. If the skin os smooth or more greasy and which areas are more red, etc. See what I mean ? but nice job !
hope I haven't offended anyone. I tried to be honest to but nice with my comments. Crits is always good, and don't hesitate if you feel that you want to give me some as well, -it can only be helpful !
-my fingers are about to break, so ciao for now!

Thanks for the advice- I absolutely agree with your comments
I had major probs when I did this pic for the nearest mirror was in my brother's room and mounted on a wardrobe so I had to do a sketch of my face (and check for spots ) so I could scan it in and use it as a template I sorta made up the shading as I went along so that didn't help
Ah well, I am learning and every bit of advice helps ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Am I too late?
I've done a very quick, kind of a characature piece!
I'm not overly happy with it, but i'm just a miserable git at the moment, as I crashed my car on saturday and my insurance company, when it admits I exist, gives me nothing but grief!
Anyway..
