This digital painting is based on a marble sculpture of the twisted emperor Commodus. Comments are welcome.
I am also including the drawing.

Vgta: yeah dude, I just got your email. Thanks, but I DID NOT try to make him look like Joaquin Phoenix from the Gladiator movie. I wanted to make him look more like the real emperor Commodus based on a marble bust of him. |

I always look forward to your work--it has a 'classical painting' feel to it that I absolutely love. The watery eyes and petulant, downturned mouth are fantastic.
I think you could use some brighter highlights on the hair--not a lot--just a couple of very sharp, bright bits to make the lighting match that on the face.
Also, the eyes have slightly different shapes. (But, when I really look at this, I don't think you ought to change that. It's little incongruities that give a face personality. Anyway, whose face is -perfectly- symmetrical?)
Anyway. What I really wanted to say was.... Hey! Cool! Love it! |

Really cool portrait. I like the light play on his face, kind of shady on one side, referring to his twisted state. Gives it an eerie, disturbing, menacing atmosphere. The mouth helps with that too, awesome pic. |

Yaz, I love your work. The brushstrokes are always...I don't know....energized! The only thing that I've noticed about your paintings is that the clothing seems to lack the tangibility of the faces. What I mean is, there's no texture to the clothes. I'm sure that it is on purpose, so what do I know? |

YAZ, my bruddah. I really love this piece, for the same reasons of all those above me. The pencil is fantastic.
The painting works as a whole, but there was something that seemed wrong to me right off. I took a few minutes and toned some things down. You'll notice the ear right off, and upper forhead (in shadow). It's not like I put a lot of pride and time into this thing, but I wanted to get an idea across.
Squint your eyes and look at both of them:
With the direction of light you've chosen, his right cheek (our left), eye, and ear were far too saturated, and stood out... too bright for being in such shadow.
If you squint your eyes (I like to close my right eye, and sorta blur my left), the one I modified should seem closer to the truer color/depth. I hope you don't mind this modification, but it's something I felt I should bring up, to make it even a better work. His ear, especially, should be lost in shadow (to a degree), as you did with his hair.
I also added a bit of the violet from his cloak, reflected on his cheek... very subtly, but it balanced the piece, I think. If I had more time, I would have done more, but I'm not sure you would have wanted me to in any case. I hope this helped!

Socar: Thanks for the advice on the hair. I will add some brighter highlights on the hair. I feel the same way about the eyes. I will probably change them too.
Dryfire,Littlepoop: Thanks guys!
Akolyte: Thanks, that's exactly what I was going for. I want to bring out his wackiness...
Autobots transform : I don't want to take the attention away from the face. I want to make sure that the focal point are the eyes, lips, not the clothes or other details.
Feebsaint: Thanks for the wonderful advice my man! I absolutely agree with you. I will make the changes right away.
Rbfigueira: Thanks friend. I don't think it is more difficult to draw women's portraits though. Matter of fact, I prefer to draw mens faces because I find them to have a lot more character and that's what I'm interested in. But I am working on some female characters, so keep an eye out. |
