sorry. no pic here yet, as I've finally broken down and decided to order me a tablet this weekend. I've heard that there's some adjustment time for the darn things, and this sounds like a PERFECT exercise to break in the new 'whack-um'.

Craig, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. After college, it's really hard to find great teachers to direct improvement. This is a fabulous excercise. I can't wait to get my tablet! ;}

I've had enough of the mouse...

Cool thread. Just a quick doodle do propagate the chaos. I really wish I was better at digital art.
Spooge - Your awesome. Have you done any digital tutorials other than the "How I work" on Goodbrush?

Back to the basics! Thanks Spooge! Suitably rusty with this exercise...tho' I preach it regularly. Great to see all these.
Here's my start... finishing is not the point I think... big shapes and accurate values are the point.

Self-crit - still need to use bigger brush sizes, so easy to get small too quickly. That's still a problem for me digitally.

If you're struggling with this (hey, I struggle with this), I humbly offer some additional ideas here:
http://quaternius.critical-depth.net/better.html
Spooge - feel free to correct the suggestions if you see anything misleading.

*sigh*

Well this time I gave more effort into getting it to look like what I was looking at when I started the initial virtal charcoal sketch. I then used the largest brush I though I could get away with for the duration of the picture, just so I wouldn't be tempted to get bogged down in details.

The mouth is in the wrong spot. But that's the least of my problems I think. I mostly was aiming at getting the values to match what I saw in the picture.

This was a great lesson, I really needed to do it! I always paint/draw straight from my imagination so I got a lot of bad habits to get rid off. Please post more lessons like these spooge!
Well, I need to do this lesson a few thousand times to REALLY finish it, if it's even possible to finish it. I've heard somewhere that u need to repeat stuff 4000 times in order to learn it.

Photoshop + wacom, 1 layer, 30*2min, 50%

Thankyou Spooge, thankyou! I started with big brushes but was so excited I had to spend time to finish it more.

I learnt so much.

Damn, I always see these threads at the very last.
anyways, here's my go at it.

8 steps total.
the big head is the final version
All kinds of things wrong with it, but I'm happy with the final product,as I used a brush size of 36 for almost all of it(something I hardly do). I worked at the size of the bigger head, I just made the others smaller so they would fit. I avoided using pure white ( I should have stayed away from pure black too) and only 13 shades of gray, maybe less than that, the overlapping colors seemed to work for alot of the other tones I wanted.
The palette and reference are here.
http://www.pennygraphics.com/samdragon/deleteme/face.htm

That's about all I can think of as to what was involved...so tear into it

I've always hated b/w painting - until now ... thanks Spooge - you brought back my inspiration and I learned a lot!
And thank you, Jezebel for your photo - the last 50 Minutes had been a great fun for me!

Think this one is better than my first attempt ... looks clearer, althouh the clothing isn't perfect :-/

Edit: I took a closer look with another screen - forget it ...
