mjmcchesney-heh, if was the best stuff you'd ever seen I'd be thinking I should have a job by now^_^
what you say about the simplification is interesting. it's certanly not something I am unaware of. getting it right on the first stroke is something I think everyone want's to do. (I mean why not, it's quicker as you say). but I find that if one becomes overly reliant on the first stroke you start to stagnate, not to say that doing it right the first time is not what I am aiming for. but in these sketches it is not what I'm really after.
they are mostly idea generation. my mind is thinking visualy on the paper. If these are going to go anywhere (and become finished Illustrations) they will be refined to a degree and go through at least one revision where I can make them clean and focus on getting the lines right (leaving some of them out, suggesting others, throwing away as many redundent ones as I can, getting the width varitaion working better etc. etc.).
at this stage I am exploring which one of these lines is the right one. sometimes I can get it first shot, (mostly after I have been drawing for a few hours) other's are a bit too unrefined in my head and need to be put down on paper before I can decide on which is best. some times I just can't draw and get into a chicken scratch mess (although none of these are really in that area).
you mention the little guy running. what I notice about that drawing is that the lines are nice in temselves but it is a useless drawing for anything but gesture and poseing. the lines are incorect. they do not describe the form correctly. it is no doubt due to my inexperiance that I can't get them down and correct first shot. but I doubt the true usefulness of that in the first place. if I start to have only one crack at thet lines I will always stagnate. it is limmiting, sketching for me is exploring the possabilities. if I were to only have one crack at the line I would ahve to do more than one drawing. I honestly doubt that there are a great number of artists who can see the line to an extent where they can decide if it is right or not in their heads before they create it. it is possible to get the lines correct first shot if it is something you know how to draw very well, but it is more about remembering how to draw that thing.
using a lot of lines and finding some gold inbetween the mess of scribbles is a way of advancing. you learn more by it.
I think I've heard that Syd Mead will sometimes just draw a pile of scribbles and see what he can find in it. this is what I am trying to say. if I was drawing from life, technique would be at the forefront of my mind, there is less idea generation and exploration going on. with stuff like this it is vital for me to get it right. If the sketch looks good then that's a plus. but I have seen way too many artist's become strangled by useing the same lines over and over becuase they are too afraid to go exploring in the mess of scribbles.
I am not totaly disagreing with you here. for total effect what you are saying is good. A lot of the time it is possible to really get it down pat and know exacly how to move the line to express texture and the correct form for a particular subject. but it is still stagnation to me. some of it is about confidence and not going all scratchy. but the confidence is more to do with finished drawings that may be of a character I have fully explored and designed or sketches that will be used as final pieces. that sort of thing is going to make more finished drawings look a lot better. but if I want to learn and find new things it's only going to hurt.
Sorry for that Rant, I don't want top sound as if I am excusing myself, I am interested in this srot of thing and like talking about it that's all=) your comments are more that welcome and helpful as well.
Gimbal8-^_^
Spooky-=)I'm glad you like that about them
Magpie-Thanks=)
agent44-Thanks man=) your encouragment means a lot.
Zorglub-I'll take that as a compliment
rdgraffix-Yes, the mist is a bit weak. I'm still working on getting that sort of effect down. should have spent some mroe time on it. I just didn't want to overwork it. you're right about the bong as well=) althogh I assure you whatever he is smoking is leagal in fairyland.
Matt Elder-there is supposed to be a moon which is lighing above. as I said the realism of it was secondary. the flying creature is supposed to be sort of hanging there talking to the little guy on the mushroom, I should have tried to do some sort of speacial effect to get the wings moving (like a humming bird or something). it does look a bit stiff.
I'm glad you say things are getting cleaner=) hehe the stuff in that old post is funny (begone evil old work).
