hey all !
So nice to see that the forum came back, phew, would be a shame if all the good info written here got lost. Ans, not least, that I would loose the only site that I actually care about checking frequently.
Anyway, here's an innlustration I did for valve, I think it was only suppose to be used as a cutout character around some screenshots in a magasine, but still it's painted and cleaned up in a pretty high resolution. (made with a tight deadline though..I think, If I remeber right )
*Dhabh, hope it was ok for me to post this.
*Now I must see if I can join in on some of the cool threads that goes around (atleast I must join in on the heads thread, I love that stuff ) |

Looks great Joachim! The clothing is awesome! =)
Two things bug me:
1. The back lighting on his left hand is way too strong. Look at the right hand as it is in shadow. At that angle, the light wouldn't reach the hand.
2. Left side of his face. The cheek is too thick. The form doesn't read right. This also adds the odd effect to the helmet/cheek thing.
Great work as always though! |

It's clean and nice.
I have to agree with the cheek being too thick. Also i think the holster look a little odd Besides from that i think it's cool ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Hey Joachim, that's really good! As henrik said, the clothing is great.
I think that the two left fingers of his left hand (errr... hope it makes sense) look smaller than the other two, it could be for the lightning or it could just be me. Anyway, nothing serious at all. It's great. |

hey, quick answering. Yeah, I agree with henrik a very much. THe face has some mistakes, actually that bugged me even while I was drawing it, I even got stucked some how, there's somethingreally frustrating with that angle....I fixed what i could but still I saw that it had some flaws...and, now I have no reason to fix it up, since it's allready published....me and micke did another version of this character, which was the cover for the game. That one is more thorough done...I will (or micke) post it within a couple of days.
The fingers, if it looks strange to you it's wrong. I did use light references, so it is possible, but if it doesn't look natural, I should have modified it. Thanks for the good feedback, keep'em coming ... |

Hey it's for that Halflife expansionpack "Blueshift" coming out from Valve. (talk about sucking up every penny you can get out of that game)
But yes, nice painting! All crit's have been said I think, oh well I don't really like the background, but that's just my taste
damn I need to paint more, argh.. |

Thats really nice Joachim..
I like the lights, especially the shiny parts on the helmet. But i see what you mean, the angel of the head doesn't seem to fit the angle of helmet, or something.. |

Hmm...you know what you didn't like in this picture, so this feels unnecessery....but anyway.
A 1 minute fix. Removing a few pixels of his cheek, adding some darker tones on his right hand where it lies in shadow under the clothing and darkening his right hand a little...oh well. Your image is great anyway. I'm just jealous

Very cool! Gotta agree to the face/helmet issues though. Background could be cooler, but i know how it is with deadlines- still great job! |

Very nice, joachim. I agree with what was said about the fingers and head-to-helmet perspective. Aside from those, I would say that his arms could use some hair on them(there's something not right about a man with bald arms). I also agree with what was said about the excellent work you did on his shirt. Very very nice. |

thanks a bunch guys. Yes, this one has many flaws. henrik, I will probably do those changes to him before I put it on my website, just so that it won't annoy me or others anymore Though, like when you did that change, his helmet starts to look a bit off in perspective too, I guess I need to do a lot of small changes to make this look propoer.
bishop, yeah, hair on his arms I agree, though you don't see much of them, but a bit would be nice.
*oh yeah, about the background. This character was made without a background, because it's supposed to be cut around and placed with other stuff on a page. So the background you see is just a bad mockup trexture mixing thing I did -sorry for making exscuses

Joachim! Great one! Bit different from your usual stuff, isn't it?
Just one thing: He's holding the gun wrong (uhm, I did a bit of shooting in my younger days - for a few weeks.... ).
Doesn't matter really. I like it a lot!

Another piece to add to the commissions page!
Wonderful work, Joachim. It is neat to see Micke and yourself getting some top notch work. Valve knows good artists when they see them
The values are great and you really captured the look of the guards from Half-Life.
Thanks for posting it! |

Nice one Joachim. Cooler than the other one I`ve seen. But to be honest, it`s hardly your best. But still really good;-)
I agreed with Olve about the hand placement, UNTIL I took out my own glock17 9mm, and figured out that I sometimes hold it like that aswell. Although it`s harldy the best way to aim, but hitting anything with a glock 9mm is pure luck anyway..so who cares.
Which reminds me..I have to get out and fire som rounds...it`s been almost a year since the last time:-(

Beautiful!
Others have pointed out some of the issues, but the main thing that strikes me is the wonderful realistic lighting. Did you use photoreference for the rendering? Specifically the skin tones and the clothing. I would love to know some tips if you have any for capturing natural light.
Or any light, for that matter. My stuff looks too painted...
Love, it tho! Got more? |

I saw that pic in one of my mags to. My only critique when I saw it there was: The helmet and the cheek look odd (already mentioned). I was just thinking how cool it was, and wondering who did it . |
