[EDIT - Updated pic]
This was really a test-run using Painter 6. Due to lots of things I just haven't had the time to do much painting of late, so I kinda sat down with Painter today and tried to work out what all the bits and bobs do.
The smeary flat brush, the woodcut tool, the airbrush (digital and fine spray) were all used. I was also playing around with layers and masks, the handling of which is vastly improved in Painter 6 (having been using Painter Classic).
I was reading over some stuff today and I found some stuff on amber fossils, basically, this is where animals get stuck in tree sap which preserves them. So I thought it might be an idea to trap some critter in some sap and paint it (seriously, no small insect was harmed in the making of this pic).
It's been pretty amazing to see how many of the artists who contribute here have improved of late. I kinda feel like I'm in the slow lane and everyone is racing past.

Very nice Ceenda! I wish I could play with Painter6, but alas, I dont have the cash to pay for it.
My only crits are this. It doesnt really look like it's stuck in the amber. I would think the colors would be more muted because light doesnt travel through amber like it does glass.. so it'd be filtered. to give an illusion of depth, you could also add a bubble or two in front of the bug itself. Secondly, his wings seem a little odd. Maybe it's just me.
Good job though! Keep posting! |

nightmare: Cheers.
sock: Yeah, the eyes could do with a bit more definition, perhaps even a different colour.
aquamire: Good point! Kinda looked like it was on and not in the amber. I've updated the pic and it should be a little more convincing now. How are the tree sketches coming along?
gseegert: Thanks for the comments. I haven't had much time for programming either recently, aside from the stuff I do at work. Does ANYONE still use VRML???
Rinaldo: If you have Painter Classic, the upgrade is about half price. |

Hey ceenda, nice to see your posting stuff again. Looks nice as usual, but i'm not so sure about the air boobles in the ambar, i think they should be brighter.
Btw, where did you get the Painter 6 upgrade? I've looked it Amazon and they say it can't be used as an upgrade for Painer Classic. |

I think you have en excellent color scheme here Ceenda. Very nice. The shape of the bug is wonderfully described too.
I must admit that I'm not a big fan of star effects. But that is a matter of taste, and I can see that it can be very effective.
Keep it up!

This is really neat Ceenda! I like the little shines on his (her? ) body. I do have a crit though... muhahaha... but it's not anything big. Perhaps the wings could have just the slightest bit more of a color to them. Right now they are very clear whereas most bug wings would have a little bit of translucence to them Yeah I know, I'm totally nit-picking here.
I also really like the little segments of it's antenna. Looks nifty :>

Thats weird I just got Painter 6 too, I haven't had much time to look at it, the amount of new feature(compared to PS5) is amazing. What I really like is the tilt sensitivity.
The pic is great, but to me it looks mostly flat (including the bubbles)and then the body of the fly is overly sticking out. But all the same its great, I think it might look better if you replaced the orangy goo with a sky like background and made his/her wings flapping (maybe).
I was thinking the same thing a while back about every one else improving, just use that as motivation to paint more(like I did, and I guess you are ).
