This is something I've been working on. It was originaly a oil painting that I was just going to touch up a bit for my web site. As I was looking at it I saw a lot of thing I wanted to change so I just decided to do it over again digitaly.

Hey, Shadowman, I like the direction you're going with the pic I am curious as to the direction you are looking to achieve. Are you going for a realism look, or a stylized kind of realism/cartoonish blend? The reason I ask this is you have some elements that lead me to see it that way.

For example, the flying creature is a good way to explain. The wing area, including the torso and the legs are rendered in a nice simplified way, that fools the eye into belieiving that you are going for realism. However, when you get to its' tail, the rendering starts to fall off becoming more flat, making it appear almost like a cartoonish styling. There's nothing worng with that, but therein lies an inconsistency, which to an artist or someone who would matter critiquing your work, would pin it in a sec. And these examples further support themselves in other areas, such as the rider, and things like the actual skeletal structure not being portrayed accurately. And that's apparent in such things like size ratios of his hands to his forearm, or the foot, which kind of looks like a stump. It appears as if you know what a foot looks like, but haven't translated that properly to your painting. And the foreshortening is a problem you seem to have, in the areas of the rider's upper chest. I think the rear arm should be hidden a bit better to support the illusion that it's truly behind him. And the facial structure appears flat, as if the guy was hit in the face with a shovel, and the mass to the back of the head isn't substantial enough, it should have some more mass to it..

I hope this helps, post the finished one, I look forward to seeing it..

later
