Hey everyone,

Over the weekend, Craig and I gave workshops at Art Center for the students. Mine session covered perspective sketching and marker rendering techniques. And here's Craig session, in which he gave us a live painting demo....using one my ugly sketches (sorry craig).

Craig: Thank you SO much for giving us this demo. It has really opened up my mind and gave me a whole new way of thinking about drawing and painting. It made me realize how important it is to focus on the most basic aspects before anything else.

Here are some images taken during the demo. I have tons more, all at 1024x768 res. I'm hoping someone w/ server space can put all of them up later(maybe 3dpalette once they get up??)

[Edit] Okay, in-progress pics are back...any word on 3Dpalette hosting these Immi? [Edit]

Thanx again Craig.....what an great learning experience.....=)

Wow, that's amazing!
Several questions come to mind immediately:
There's a background which seems to be a 90-degree flipped painting of a man in front of some pyramids or something, I assume an old image made by Craig. I suppose he does that a lot, for texture? (Because I see lots of beaiutiful texture work in his images.) Also, at the end there are some very rough brush strokes, but it seems he was working in PS all the time, how was that done? Finishing in Painter? The 2 orange blotches at the beginning, what purpose did they serve? A palette? I have more questions, but I'll calm down now...

Cool, I wish I could have been there. How often do you get to see art lessons from an exceptional concept artist and Mr. digital matte himself. Awesome.

Wants to see more of them. Doesn't critical-depth.net give away as much webspace as you want as long it's for art-related use?

Moments like these are to be treasured. Made my day. . .. Doesn't matter that we have to pay $$ for the CD. Well worth it. Definitely give us a heads-up when it becomes available.

feng -
Thanks for gettin' my Monday started off with some good inspiration. Fired-up the computers Monday morning, checked email, checked the forum...great stuff!
The CD will be on order as soon as available!

Steven -
If I'm not mistaken, the background is one of the pirate pics we've seen here on the Forum; looks flipped, rotated and color-adjusted. I love how the layer opacity has been pushed around in these images. Now I'm gonna fool around with this more.

I too, would like to know how those "rough" brush marks and the "scratches" in the background were done in photoshop. I can do it in Painter, but cannot quite get this effect in PS.

I worship the Orange Shoulder of Spooge!

Tell ya what; I'd probably pay just to see a split screen tape of CM about 30s long doing those weird texturing strokes (as per under the tank in the first shot) that show up in everything and generally create a very cool effect.

I think we all want a cd huh? That has to be one hell of a cool cd. A few of my favorite artist in the boards are feng for his awsome concept arts and ofcourse without a doubt Craig.

They do incredible and inspireing work. As many of you also do.

Awesome Feng. I'll see whether I can arrange some space on CG Channel (3DP is still in a very iffy stage.) Who arranged this at the Art Center? Perhaps we could arrange to have the video recording uploaded to the web? Might be a good exchange...Art Center gets some good publicity, and we get some good content and everybody gets to see the masters of the universe for free! whoop!

The video will not be released. I am really sorry. If you want to see me working, I have done this before on several occasions.

painter-bridge sequence

under my sink sequence

tank sequence

all are in quicktime format (sorry)

I did this demo at Art Center with the understanding that it would not become a commercial venture, and that seems to be the path that it is taking.

I initially said “OK” to the video taping without giving it much thought. It never occurred that it might have commercial value. Then the idea was to tape it so those who could not attend could see it. Fine once again. My only caveat at the time was that art center not profit by it, as I was being paid a token fee for the event. I mistakenly assumed it was coming out of the organizers pocket. This was my mistake and I should have clarified.

Before you accuse me of being a profiteer and only interested in money, please understand that this is exactly what art center is. Nowhere on their stationary does it say a non-profit institution. So without thinking clearly, I said fine, sell the videos, donate the proceeds to charity; it’s not worth anything anyway.

But art center has total rights to whatever the students do, in or out of class, and would probably claim that this video, done at their school, is their property and sell it. Sell something that they were barely willing to compensate me for at all. And there would be nothing I could do to prevent it. This is not OK. I don’t know if this sequence of events would have taken place, but I see in Feng’s remarks that it is going to be sold in the student store, and from there onto the internet. So I see this is something that is now out of my control completely, and many other parties may profit by it. Consider someone downloading your work from your site, making cd’s of it and selling it. And this person is someone who has played hardball with you in the past. It is very disheartening. That is why I want these tapes back, I don’t want them floating about anywhere.

The photos that Feng took are OK by me, as long as nobody sells them. It blows me away that this crap has any commercial value, but people’s behavior toward it indicates otherwise.

Also there is the matter that I have not seen these videos, I don’t know their quality, etc. If I do something like this in the future, I will do it the way I want it, and I will control it.

I do not feel badly towards the person who organized this and video taped it, I said it was OK. I do not feel he intentionally set this up this way. It was my fault for not thinking through the ramifications of it. Again, it never stuck me as having any commercial value. And it is not a matter that I want all the money, I think it is reasonable to expect that others will not be making money on it while I make nothing.

I really feel sick about this whole mess. I just want to make images and be left alone for the most part. My email is clogged with the most bizarre requests and demands, and if I don’t comply, insults and threats. I don’t have the slightest problem with most people who contact me, but it takes time to evaluate each contact. So the efficient thing to do is be cautious, and that makes people think I am a great big dickhead. I really, really hate the position I am in. I feel it draining away my enthusiasm for participating here, teaching in general, and even artwork as a whole.
