[Katana]

Here is a samurai that I drew, colored and now posted.



I tried to use colors reminiscent of old Japanese art, tell me what you think.

something about his right arm/shoulder doesnt look right, but overall a good drawing. Is this the same Katana fro the SFA boards?

I don't wanna be picky. But his hands is all backwards. You have the left hand att the bottom of the katana and the right on top of it. And he would fall down if he had that kamai stance. And then, the katana shoud be pointed at the opponents throath at all times (except when you're actually slashing at your oponent).

Also, the thing with samurai's is that half of it was a big play. You had to keep up your appearence and act cool . So standing like that wouldn't had done at all. The back should be straight. And when you move forwards it's with the main force in your pelvis area. You don't run in to an battle with you head stretched out like that.

And at last (as if that wasn't enough ranting from my side) I don't think to would easy to use those shoes. He should have battle sandals.

Hope it helps. Since I know it's hard to know all these things from just watching a samurai movie or two.

Cool!!!

The similar type pictures that I have seen in books from memory had fatter people, or at least disproportional to a large extent,

but all that aside I did pick up on the style your after, nice work!!!!

I love samurai and japanese stuff. But japanese people are not so hairy And as zaphod brought up those sandals wouldn't be convenient for battle, and leaning over like that does a number on your balance. However, contrary to what zaphod said, there are more than one kamae when holding a sword.

Those were all technicalities, however. The artistry itself is good. I think you got pretty close to the ancient japanese style. If you want some examples of this type of art go to electric samurai, click on 'cobweb castle' and then click on 'samurai gallery'.

Prety good. Paper texture on the sarong/skirt/(kilt?) makes it look flat. Just remove that or at least lower its opacity and effect on the painting itself.

Patric: Yes the shoulder is awkward, and then when I look again it is not. I don't know, but you are right, there is something. SFA? different Katana.
Zaphod: I did a lot of research before doing this picture and I was pretty sure that . . . wait I didn't do any research. I did a two year stint in Okinawa, zero of which was spent studying Japanese history. But I did come away with a love of Japanese films (Kurasawa). You seem to know samurai, can you point me to some good sources?
zero21: I wanted to color it in the old style but the line work is my style (skinniness).
Snake Grunger: Most don't, but not all. In truth I added the hair cause it need something. It was creative choice.
Akolyte: No, a circular saw blade.

Bishop Six: Thanks for the compliment and thanks for the link, I booked marked it. As for your first comments, as I have said, Creative choice and zero research, if I hit a kamae it was pure luck.
Collosimo: late in the process I decided to try to make it look flat, but it does lose the constancy of the rest of the picture.
