I'm planning to do a lot of heads from this thread;
http://www.sijun.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=003052

So I decided to start a personal thread for them. Hopefully there'll be a notice improvement as I go along.

May as start with the original three;

Coming up next: more of the same!

(In order painted)

I come back to this one later and tried to get the expression closer.

All first-pass pics, and as is the norm the expressions are a long way off.

The expressions on these two work better.

-snip- (needed the server space and these sucked)

OK, I give up. I cannot draw this guy's head! These are three attempts, but there were others attempts too, trying different things.

The latest one; went back to an earlier face I had trouble with and tried to do it better. Not really sure if it's better or worse though.

---

Comments on things I'm consistantly doing wrong gladly accepted. I really struggle with eyes, but even stuff like getting the expression and lighting good could be improved a lot I expect. More practice.

Well i think its cool. so

As usual, you dampen my want to even attempt these anymore, because mine suck, and yours dont.

how long did you spend on each one?
they get clearer as you keep doing them, so my favorite one is the last one.

i dont see anything wrong with them cause you fixed blurryness as you went on so

*hugs* awsome sumi

Pritt: I started a new thread just for mine. No probs there.

Darkmoon:

The first sets were about 10-15 mins on each pic, although I spent more time on that last one (maybe 30 mins).

The blurriness of the first three is from using the airbrush and working quickly - thats just what it looks like the way I paint. I used the Brush in later pics, which tends to look less blurry even when using the same approach.

Thanks for the comments!

--

I spent about two hours on this one;

About 50 mins of that time was on the damn eye! And even after all that time I still couldn't get the same sad/worried expression on the original pic (love that expression).

More to come.

This last is magnificent! The sleeve is especially captivating. As far as the eye, yours looks a little more open (and the ear, well, the rest of the pictire is amazing).
This is top notch work.

Just a question ! I love doing realistic works based on a reference.

Did you do this piece larger than the one that you posted, or did you do it at the exact same size you posted.
I want to know for my own reference...should I be working large, then size down
or should I just work on it
at the exact same size all the way through ???

i am in need of a response !

Anthony: I painted that at size. Usually I paint a lot bigger and quite loose, but decided to try something different that time.

Others: glad you liked it.

More experimenting here, colorization of the image;

I find that pretty interesting. Interesting way to work: do it all in grey first, and then worry about color later.

Although to me it does kinda have the appearance of being a "tinted B&W image".

That colorization is gorgeous... I love the richness of it. Makes me want to try and color mine

Go for it Jez! Just create a new layer, make it Overlay, and then use the airbrush to wipe on the colors. The only trick is getting it to look more like a painting than a tinted print.
