You know how it goes, a new band/artist appears. Everyone thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread.
Said band go away, compile another album that's a bit crapper than the one before.
Repeat until band disappears...
I was wondering which bands or artists you think have actually started off not-so-great and seem to have improved with every new release? |

front line assembly.
when bill leeb was thrown out of skinny puppy, he knew nothing. he was, after all, thrown out 'cause they actually had to write numbers with markers to his moog organ so he'd know what key to press next..
after he started front line assembly, the over 90 releases still blow me away. different styles, different themes, different names, yadda dadda. mad cool stuff. *nods* |

Most bands never decline in talent or vanish, they simply change their style and you either like it or you don't. |

i agree with faustgfx, frontline got way better with age. never did a crappier album follow a better one. allways innovating and improving. i think what youre refering to only happens when a debut album is thrust to #1, then theres all this pressure to perform, or some shit. bjork, same story. cept i like sugar cubes better cuz that dude cracks me up.

Screaming Trees, I'm not sure if they still exist as a band, if not, well, Mark Lanegan. The Afghan Whigs, they just dissapeared though. Urge Overkill, Blind Melon, ... *sigh* this sucks, looks like every band I like is going into oblivion.
On the other hand, there are some groups that started great and are still great like the Black Crowes, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Tom Petty... Well, the list could go on, but in general, nowadays music sucks big ass from my point of view, too many next-big-things-that-sound-like-farts.
Bear with me, haven't sleept much and I'm in a bad mood ... |

Screaming Trees... oh yeck yeah. They sucked big ole donkey doo dads when they started out. Currently they are supposedly back in a Seattle studio "writing & recording." Mark Lanegan is one of those singers, who for unknown reasons, is so gawd damn good that no one knows about him. Which is really, really sad.
Agree with A. Buttle, Sepultura was really starting to get good. Max leaves, now they are on the downward spiral into sucky shitty oblivion.
Corrosion of Conformity... exactly, first album should have been called "We just suck", after they found a style that made them really stand out as a good band.
Carcass... OH MY!!!. Heartwork is the total, total, total classic speed/death/technical metal album. Whereas their previous albums were shit.
Entombed's early work wasn't all that great but with Wolverine Blues they started to get with it.
Meat Puppets, from how bad can we be, to how poppy can we be, to just good.
Bad Religion- They couldn't even PLAY their instruments on the first couple of albums. Now, The New America is a really good album.
Metallica- No wait they went from good to shit.
I think that the majority of bands go the other way though. One good album, then 5 crap albums before the labels throws them to the curb. Two weeks later the guys from "That great band from a few years ago,"
...washing the dishes at Denny's. |

Somebody else knows about the Screaming Trees and Mark Lanegan! Oh, wait, you're from Seattle, that's cheating . I agree with you on the Mark Lanegan remark, saw him on concert once, he had people almost hipnotized without even moving. They're recording again? That's good news!
Metallica is one of the worst examples of evolution. Four perfect albums, Kill'em all is good but in no way at the same level as the next four, and then they just start doing crap and getting tattoes .
Sepultura, I really liked Arise, Chaos A.D. and Roots but never bothered checking what they're doing now.
I think that's really hard for a band to do every record better than the one before, I'm happy if they can keep a level of quality. Then again, most bands break after 2 or 3 records because they don't sell wich really sucks. |

Ceenda, that's what you get when you listen to a 4 man band, neither one of them ever having actually studied music, they just play whatever sounds 'cool', then they think since they make a ton of money, it's because they're awesome musicians, which is false. Then they're so hooked on booze and partying, they don't spend time making new/good songs.
Classical composers never degrade, even after 400 or so years. |
