Hi all,
Here's a pic I just finished of an astronaut. I took a couple of liberties with it, but I don't feel I pushed it quite far enough. The whole image was based on a doodle I did while on the phone. The bubble around the astronauts head I based more around a soap bubble than glass... I thought it'd look more interesting this way.
Thoughts?

Very Very professional work Jamien, and its nice to know that you went to the same college as mine. Was learning at Algonquin College worth it? After graguate, do you wish you were in Sheridan instead ? |

i really like the rendering/look of this. the bubble turned out nice (maybe some more antialiasing around it?) and i find that's a bold use of space to the left of the little guy that adds an even more interesting note to it.
the wrinkles in the fabric esp. around the arms look like they need a li'l work, but since it's cartoonish anyways (and zero gravity ) it's maybe not even that important.
btw. been to your site- great stuff, lovely style (love the old man)! |

Very cool! Dig the rendering of the face. Definitely anti-alias the bubble.

dr. bang: Thanks! Did you go through the animation program at Algonquin? Or another course? In truth, I applied to Sheridan twice. And got rejected twice. So my going to Algonquin was more a forced choice. Still, I am quite glad I did. There were/are some great teachers and I learned an emmense amount on classical animation. Do I wish I went to Sheridan? No. At Algonquin I had the opportunity to simultaneously learn classical and computer animation - Sheridan would have made me wait until fourth year. Conversely, I have had people ask me in professional environments why I didn't go to Sheridan. I think from a pure "send out resume and hope for a response" stand point, it may have not attracted attention to me. But that attitude in the industry is certainly changing....
perplexer: Hehe, yup! More antialiasing need around the bubble. I used the 'expand' function to increase my mask for the edge, and that was truly a mistake. I'll have to fix that. I'm also not convinced of some of the wrinkles, but not sure if I want to mess with them too much. I don't want a fully realistic suit. And, yea, 0 gravity!
halogenic: thanks! I didn't do any outlines as I would, at some point, like to make this in 3D. Outlines in 3d are a pain.
painted melody: Cool! Yup, gonna add some anti-aliasing.
swampbug: Hehehe, we have a couple Canadian astronauts! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

I really like the cartoony look of it, looks like it's from a magazine or something.. very nice. I also like the fact that there's no "dominant" outlines which makes it looks all soft and nice. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Like it! What's with the movie theater style belts on his legs? Yeah Canadians built the robot arm for the International Space Station! There. Point for the Canadians.

Nice.. definetely looks like an illustration for a magazine or something.. I dunno why?!
I love the style and rednering... I do however think that you could work on the shadows... they dont seem dark enough in some areas.. just look at any white object and see that it infact is not always quite so white...look at the shadows.
But then again... its cartoony. Probably intended.. just a suggeston.. |

Wow, thanks for all the great compliments. Appreciated! OK, I've redone the border of the bubble. This time I used a path and stroked it, and it seems to have worked much better.
I also noticed that the shadow of the astronaut on the blue thing didn't go all the way up the body, so I extended that as well.
Thanks all for your comments. |
