I think graffiti looks so damn cool, but I'm curious about something. Is there any reason why it's usually done so you can't read it easily? We have a thing downtown called "tunnel visions" where all these artists got to go paint murals underneath this big bridge. It's really cool to look at. Most of the things are paintings of objects, people, places, symbols, etc... but ever so often you see one with that graffiti style text and I never have any idea what it says! Just a style that developed over time I suppose?

it probably developed over time. but also, if they didnt twist it up a lot, then it wouldnt look as cool. I think as long as its legible in some way the important thing is that it looks as cool as possible. as far as readability goes that one isn't too tough i dont think. there are a lot of worse ones, probably what you're talking about. |

Jez, I think "wildstyle" became popular in the late seventies. It probably started when bombers realized that they weren't just writing information, but the letters should be aprieciated as abstact forms themselves. Besides, it's more important that other writers (who can read it more easily) know who did it, than it is for us. |

hey sear you do that in photoshop? I did a graffiti lettering in photoshop and it was a pain with the wacom's presure thing. I gotta figure a way to turn that off for stuff like that. I eventually filled in as much as I could then took it to streamline to clean it up, process was kinda long.
Yours is really nice. And yeah I can read it, dunno if i could have if you didn't tell us what it said. I like the arrow pointing up in the background. pretty sweet. ^_^ |

maxon: thanks. just go ahead... it's all about practice, pratice and of course practice.
daz199: thanks.
burnout: thanks. yeah acet has mad skillz. we're both in the same crew. he doesn't really like art forum...
jezebel: it's all about letters. twisting them, mixing them, making them wild... sometimes tho it can be really readable tho. like
blockletters (or blockbusters) which are always made using simple letter (yet stylised) in order to be seen and read by everybody.
edible snowman: cheers!
greenpeach: you got it absolutely right! yeah!
nextgen: well, it is a scanned sketch. the yellow color and the skyblue outline were made on paper while using TRIA markers. the highlights and
the backgroud were made on computer.i just can't draw decent outline in painter. nothing tops paper sketch for graffiti. thanks for enjoying my stuff.
graffiti fo' life.

this is cool. I worked with a guy at a paper store who had some mad skills with grafitti art. He invited me to go out bombing with him but I never got around to it. Anyway, I don't know why some people don't appreciate this form of art. I think because of it's ties with gangs and stuff that people automatically dismiss it. Kinda like throwing the baby out with the bath water.
I think these artists get a lot less credit than they deserve. I've tried myself to do some grafitti style art and failed miserably, which just increased my respect for the artform.
Sear, do you know of any links on the web to galleries or pages devoted to this art? I would love to check it out.
Anyway, you did a good job and I would love to see more stuff like this from you. |

sear I am guessing Swiss-French and Canadian. or is it Swiss and French-Canadian.
I agree with agent44 graffiti is a highly under rated art form. I came across some articles is some Art Teachers magazines that actually give the art form some real credit. one thing they had in there was that 60 ti 75% of the 'tag-ers'/'bombers' have at least 2 years of formal art training. And that the majority of then idelized abstract art.
That was in Canada, some of the best graffiti I have seen was in the land of the swiss during a ski trip in the German quarter(muren, latabrunenn, interlaken)
Loven the stuff. |
