Click here to see a detail.

Well, I've finally completed it. Thankyou BooMStick, Cos, HardCoil and everyone else who offered advice and critique in W.I.P., you know who you are. I haven't really left myself time to make any more changes on this , but I thought I'd show you all how it came out.

This is for for the new RPG, Haven: City of Violence. I love doing cover artwork like this, it really gives me a chance to test my limits. Fast, simple jobs can be fun, but they just don't give the satisfaction that a full-blown illustration does.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

I can see 3 very distinct red lines around the guy closer to the foreground, I am just wondering what those are supposed to be? Blood doesn't usually extend off a person in a strait line, that made me think it might be a lazer from a lazer scope but that would only explain one of them not all three (she has two guns but one is pointing up so the sight wouldn't be visible...)

Wow.... the detail is a complete piece of work on it's own!

This is really cool.

Do you use a dual monitor display with photoshop? Or do you just paint it very large, and zoom out again and again to see the whole image, and capture a feel if it is going well or not while you are working ?

I'd really like to know whether Spooge Demon and others are using dual display systems or not ? I think it would be very beneficial to the forum...because people could get the right equipment if it does help a great deal.

If not, could you give a little explanation as to how you do something like this ?

I think it's great RDGraffix !!
The detail is awesome, but aside from that, the action takes you into the piece...

please post a reply ! : eek:

In answer to r4bid, the client requested indications of bullets whizzing past the characters on the rear cover. I wasn't sure about them at first, but I placed them in as a test and found that they made the composition of the rear cover much more dynamic. The red may be slightly confusing, but they broke it up too much with more yellow in them.

This is how the illustration will work over the front and rear covers, BTW, although the non-image area could be white instead of black:

Anthony, I don't use a dual monitor display, just a 21inch Mac studio monitor. The plan is to switch to an Apple Cinema display within a year.

You've pretty much hit it on the head though. At first I'll rough up the entire image zoomed out, so I can get the balance I'm after. After that, I'll work on it larger and keep pulling out to make sure it's working as a whole.

The detatil on an image is relatively insignificant, you need to get the image working with basic forms first. If you can get that right, then the deatil is just icing on the cake.

Let's get past the fact that the whole composition is superb (including all of the detail, though something of the girl's face doesn't sit exactly right). The way this works as a cover absolutely stuns me. Just her, blazing away on the front cover is fantastic, but wait! Open the thing up and there's a whole new dimension to the image. And... IT ALL WORKS! It's almost as good as a sex pop-up book. Power to the people!

Nice painting. I like the detail, but the barrels in the background look funny... they are too bent and the area of reflection on them is too large. Still, good job!
